Hey just wondering if anyone has replaced their vhf radio and with what? I have a bad cord on mine but I am wondering if I just just replace the unit or pay WM 47 for a new cord and see if that is my only issue. I would like to find one that fits right back into the slot the existing one is in.

Thanks
John

I was on the phone wuth west marine today. They told me I could deal with the manufacturer directly and have Raymarine refurbish the mic for $75

The replacement radio might be he Raymarine 218 but the cost is over $500!

My boat orginally had a Raymarine 210. It wasn't DSC capatible. I replaced it with a Standard Horizon GX1500S.
At the time AIS wasn't out, but this has been a great radio. I'd replace it with SH's new AIS compatible one now if I were replacing a radio.

I just did the AIS radio. I did have a problem with too many NMEA outputs and not enough inputs. I had to add an Actisense NMEA multiplexer. It is really neat to have the AIS data on the chart plotter screen.

John, Raymarine will repair it for $75 and it is like new. I had mine done last year and couldn't be happier. Now I need a mic holder cause I broke mine a while ago :smt089

I replacedmy factory radio with Standard Horizon 1600. It is DSC compatible. Works great. I got an MMSI # so I am AIS enabled.

Also got to mount in a much better location so I could hear whle underway. Will cover up old hole with nice piece of Starboard.

DSC and AIS, while they work together in the units that are capable of AIS, are two different things. Your GX1600 model is not a AIS unit. It is DSC, which is Digital Selective calling. This sends your position and receives anyone elses position (within range) if you have thier MMSI programmed into your VHF, provided you have it properly wired to your GPS.

AIS capatible VHF Units receive the tranmitted signal of AIS boats that are constantly broadcasting their position and MMSI information. Those boats with AIS transponders and AIS compatible VHF are sending and receiving their projected track, speed, position and information about the boat on the GPS.

Call Linda Sullivan at Ray Marine. She handles all the repairs. I had my mic cable replaced last season for $75 and couldnt be happier. Linda.sullivan@raymarine.com and 603-324-7950. Call is better than email.

Raymarine is awesome! I couldn't load the MMSI on my 2004-build radio, so they had me send it in. They upgraded the software, replaced a known-defective IC, programmed the MMSI and shipped it back for FREE!! Guess where I'm going to buy my electronics when I upgrade?!

I ditched my old ray 215 and bought a new standard horizon GX 2200. It has a built in GPS and AIS and interfaced to my C80 chart plotter. It is much much much more capable than the 215 which is now on the bottom of the river.
