I need to change the muffler in my IAC. (Stalls 1st time in gear when cold.) The manual says to refer all IAC service to a Mercruiser dealer. What's the big deal? From other threads it sounds like some of you guys service your own. How do I change the muffler w/out screwing something up?

I had a similar problem last year with my 5.0 liter. The IAC muffler is a small piece of foam material about the size of your thumbnail and cost less than $2 for the part. Remove the spark arrestor and look into the throttle body which is divided in two sections. On one side you will see the little piece of foam in a comaprtment that filters the air going to IAC solenoid. It gets clogged up and causes idle problems like you describe. In reality you could probably just pull it out with some tweezers and spray clean it with carb cleaner and put it back in. This spring I also had to replace the IAC solenoid, costs about $90, easy to replace with allen wrench.

I was amazed how a little piece of dirty foam could cause the boat to run so poorly.
