Sorry about cross posting - just remembered there was a forum subcategory for maintenance and repair!

I just discovered that the Pro Mariner 30 battery charger which is supposed to charge the three banks of batteries on my 1994 330DA is dead. Turning on the breaker does not lead to a line increase of voltage to the 13-14 volts, the yellow "Dc Available" light, isn't coming on, and there is ac voltage confirmed by volt meter going to the unit.

My question is this - I obviously need to replace the unit and this unit is no longer being made. What should I replace it with? Any suggestions without breaking the bank?

Thanks
Jordan

See the other reply ... but check the fuse on the interals a $1 repair maybe

with anything capable of outputting 30A or better and of course with 3 banks

I use the Charles Chargers. A 30 amp 3 bank is around 250.00 retail, I sell them a bit less than that. It is a good idea to check the internal fuse though. Chargers don't usually fail all at once. Usually a bank or two will fail not the entire thing. Anything is possible though. Removing the leads from the battery and test with VOM is good idea too.

any failure on high voltage side will "kill'whole unit:)

Well-> expensive day.

I took out the old unit and went to check to see if there is an internal fuse as was suggested. I cut off the rivets holding the case to discover a large fairly rusted transformer and no fuse.

I just finished installing a 40amp xantrex (sp?) battery charger recommended by the Marinemax dealership around the corner from me. I don't completely understand the settings, however, on this charger. One setting is for Ramp, flood with subsequent trickle, the next setting if for ramp with flood without trickle, and the last is trickle. Why would I want one instead of the other? Wouldn't I want it kept on the first setting at all points in time?

The other element I don't completely understanding about this unit is it has a battery operating temperature selector. Fine - in the bildge with nothing running, the ambient temperature is between 60-80. But should the switch for the temperature reflect this ambient temperature or the temperature in the bildge with two 7.4 L 454s running with a generator running? It must hit into the 100s at this point?

I know this is off the topic that I started - but I wanted folks to know what happened, what was recommended, and that the promariner series does not have an internal fuse.

Thanks

Misread question, make bad post. Now how to delete it?

Did you get the battery temp sensors? If not you don't need to worry about the battery temp features of the unit. If you call Xantrex they are very helpful and can tell you all about that charger. They make very quality stuff.
