Hi Everyone. I just purchased a 1989 SeaRay 220 DA. This is the first time I've owned a boat with shore power.

The boat is equipped with a 'Professional Mariner' 20amp battery charger / 15amp power supply (old looking). When I flip the breaker labeled 'Converter', you can here it turn on (strong humming noise). This thing looks pretty old, and I'll I've been able to find so far is that it's known as 'The Battery Blaster'. The unit has 120v ac going in, and coming out is a fairly heavy gauge black and red wire, and also a fairly small sized red wire. I don't understand why there is two red wires? Both of which were directly connected to battery # 1. Can anyone help with this.

I'm considering upgrading this thing, mostly due to the annoying humming. But all I can find is battery chargers, nothing that claims to be a battery charger/power supply. Do these not exist anymore? Do people just run the 12v items on their boats off the batteries even while on shore power, and just let the battery charger keep the batteries topped up? :smt100

Thanks guys.

"Do people just run the 12v items on their boats off the batteries even while on shore power, and just let the battery charger keep the batteries topped up?"

If the leads coming out of the charger are all hooked to a battery, then that is exactly what is currently going on.

When you're on shore power (110V), you're not using the batteries -- unless you're using 12V equipment.

Call or visit Pro Mariner's website. They are a VERY good company and have great customer service. They'll help you out with checking to see if the current unit is still in good operating condition. Although, the newer ones are SO MUCH better. Also, considering your current one is 25 years old... it's certainly earned it's keep and is ready to retire!

Get a charger that will charge at least two batteries, if not three. Something like the Pro Mariner ProNautic 1220P or 1230P. You'll need to verify your current wire sizing and fuses - if you have to change them, it's relatively easy.

+ 1 what Dennis said, call Pro Mariner. If you upgrade to one of their new batteries, they may even give you a discount, the owner did that for me a few years back

most likely the large red goes directly to battery or battery switch, and the other small red goes to the idiot light on power panel just to indicate that is actually on.
