I finally did it. We could not stand how dirty and smelly the carpet would get. Not a terribly hard job. The worst part is pulling the old carpet. After that it was about 40 hours of labor. I did not want to sand and fill the uneven floor. Instead, I glued down 3/8" marine plywood and screwed it with 1" flat head #10 1" screws. The flooring is 5mm vinyl plank glued down. Then I put carpet on the perimeter witch will probably get replaced next year with a plain linoleum. I still need to trim the perimeter(baseboard) and install some type of bull nose on the stairs. I also added lights to the stairs as originally there was only on and it was ugly. I am very happy with the floor. There is texture so it isn't slippery. For som reason the color looks lighter in the pictures than it actually is.

what type of flooring did you use?
The flooring is 5mm vinyl plank. I bought it at lumber liquidators. It is manufactured by a company called tranquility. It is glued down for my application but doesn't need to be. You can buy similar stuff at Home Depot, however, it is about 1/2 the thickness.
