I need to have the transom assemblies replaced on my boat. I am looking for recommendations for a good shop to perform the work. Preferably Mercury Marine certified. I am looking in the Upper Chesapeake Bay area. Anywhere north of the Potapsco river.

In your area. And will honestly tell you, most boats that need a transom replaced are too old to ever recoup the cost. I had a 89 268 at 15yo needed a transom. Gave it away to a guy. It was paid off. He spent 5 years redoing transom in his backyard and boat looks nice today. If you can’t do the work, paying someone to do is CRAZY expensive. Use the money as a down payment on something newer.

Wording is sketchy. What is ‘transom assemblies’ there is one transom. Not assembles. Please clarify.
He has twins. I felt the pain on our 290 and had my transom assemblies replaced. Its correct. However, I dont want to necessarily recommend the shop that did mine. They are nothing special.

Thanks for the replies. The boat is in great shape. It spent its first 7 years in salt water and the steering pins are leaking. I have made the decision to replace the transom assemblies to hopefully be rid of current and future problems with salt.

I was considering Tomes Landing in Port Deposit or Premier Marine in Middle River but I have no experience with either and I don’t know anyone who does. They are both Mercury Marine repower dealers. I tried contacting Bosuns marine down near Kent Island but the quote I got from the service manager was beyond outrageous. They should have just told me they don’t want my business.

The cost to replace 2 assemblies will probably be in the $10-$15k range once you figure in labor and the other miscellaneous items that you should replace on the motors while they are out.

Espos4, I think your estimate is spot on. That’s what I was expecting. The quote I got from Bosuns, who is the local Cobalt dealer, was a minimum of a $18k labor + parts + they said they would need my boat for probably 6 months from start to finish.

Marz...that sounds high. 18K PLUS parts? I would call around. Should be 10-15K all in.

Try North Cove Marine at Markleys on Middle River. Kyle. 443-465-2403. They have done outdrive work on mine, currently have it replacing shaft seal. Worth a call.
Excellent mechanics.

I did the jr marine repair on my port side and replaced steering pin with stainless pin two bushings and a seal wasn’t hard at all to do a couple of 100 bucks, I did over the summer find a excellent used outer transom assembly and I am replacing the repaired one as well as replacing starboard side steering pin and seal I’ll have less than a 1000 in it total. Not hard if you have access to removing or moving engines.

Looking for a rocket mechanic in Titusville.
