I would appreciate some advice on what brand and model speaker to purchase to replace my 4 broken original 6 1/2 " Clarions and one subwoofer. I have also read about amps and some other detailed information on this site, but if possible, I would just like to purchase 4 speakers and a sub woofer to replace my old ones in a plug and play mode.

Thanks,

Jeff

I went with JL Audios M770-CCX speakers and M10IB Sub...VERY happy with my choice. The system sounds EXCELLENT...no regrets

It all depends on your budget. Anything, would be an upgrade over the Clarion stuff.

i just replaced all my speakers with MTX and they sound great. The price is right for the quality you get. JL audio are also good but i think they cost too much in my opinion.

Dani-Lu,

For a drop-in, Alpine has a marine free-air 10" woofer and marine 6 1/2" coaxials. They're definitely an upgrade in sound over the CLarion in a similar price bracket. If you can oversize the openings, Alpine has an impressive 7.7" coaxial. A sub and two pair 6 1/2" coaxials are under $400 from an authorized dealer.

A step up would be the JL Audio. They have a marine free-air 10" sub plus 6 1/2" and 7.7" marine coaxials. They're a little more power hungry but feature the most linear response. A sub and two pair 6 1/2" coaxials are under $750 from an authorized dealer.

Keep in mind that all marine rated subwoofers are not a true free-air.

I am new to the boating experience and this may be a stupid question but what Sea Ray boat come with subwoofer? I am picking up a 2003 sundeck and didn't know it was psooible to put in a subwoofer in it and where? Also where do you buy marine only speaker. very interesting..

I purchased Infinity Marine speakers (white in color)...you need to be careful of the OD of the speaker cover as many are slightly smaller so you will see some discolored vinyl.

Anyway, the Infinity speakers are slightly larger than the stock Clarions and sound great for the quality of the stereo. I did not replace my woofer.

Good Luck....

Dani-Lu,

While Polk speakers are marine-rated they do not have a true marine offering, ie: the non-sealed pole piece on the dB series for example. But the coaxials sound good and are fine in a fresh water environment.

If you want a matching appearance, Polk does not make a free-air subwoofer. Although several boat manufacturers use Polk subs in free-air applications, they are under damped and perform poorly. These are strictly small box (sealed or bass reflex) woofers. This is not a criticism of the actual driver but of the application.

we put in 8 inch Memphis speakers to replace
the clarion.
Had to make the holes bigger but they sound great.

Also upgraded to the pioneer head unit and wired remote.

Added a Memphis amp for a sub and
the sony amp powers all the speakers.

May look to upgrade the sony amp for the memphis
speakers.

I had the Memphis speakers in my prior boat:smt038

MB Quartz makes some nice speakers that I have installed as upgrades in a couple of S/R yachts. As far as an amp, I like the clarion 480m (best for plug and play) Better upgrade is to go a Diamond audio amp, will need to run large positive and negative cables to power, but worth the money and time to install. The power and clarity at high volume is excellent. Definately use the 10 inch mb quartz sub....Log on to mbquartz.com for more info......
