Removing painted on boat name

I just bought a 245 Weekender and the previous owner had a name painted on the stern by the storage hatch. Any ideas on how to remove the paint?

easy way:
you need few squares of carpet (4"x4" or bigger) - the type with hard backing not rubber backing, some rubbing compound, acetone, rubber glows and some rags.
put some compound on soft side of carpet, soak with acetone and start rubbing off painted name.
once a while switch to hard side to scrape off more paint.
switch carpet to new piece when is "full" of paint.
repeat steps until name is gone and wipe off all compound/paint residue

more difficult way: very likely there are going outlines left after name has been removed.
you can wet sand it and polish for nice finish
