I am planning to bypass the hot water heater(HWH). I see there is a cheapo option to find a piece of hose and hose clamp it temporarily to the red and blue lines going into the HWH.

Is there a trick to remove the red and blue hoses from their fittings - a twist, turn and pull or ??? I am assuming they are removed from their connectors for this cheapo bypass - right?

The cheapest way is to use an 18" long section of 5/8 inch heater hose and 2 hose clamps. That is my method.

As far as the connectors go, there is a C shaped clip that keeps the blue/red hose locked in. Pull the C shaped clip out (don't loose it), push in the fitting end, and pull the red/blue hose out. A small screwdriver or needlenose pliers helps to remove the clip. Slip the 5/8" heater hose over each end (connect the blue inlet to the red outlet) and put a hose clamp on each. Drain the hot water tank by opening the drain valve, while opening the pressure relief valve to let air in.

Good luck

An easier way is to remove the fitting from the copper nipple on the tank and then insert the other plastic tube in the fitting. Or buy a few inches of 15 mm tubing and connect the two plastic fittings.
