What is the requirement for posting your boat reg numbers on the hull exterior? Is it based on length of the boat?

Thanks
Tim

It will depend on your state laws... typically boats less that 27 feet are required to display registration on each side of the bow.

In MO it is on side - in IL it is on transom. I am referring to documented boats.

Tim,
If your boat is a USCG Documented vessel most states don't require you to post the registration numbers. You do (in most states) have to display your annual registration decal but that can be posted on one of the side windows, preferably near the helm and again on the opposite side. Also, for a Documented boat you must post your documentation number somewhere inside the hull and there's a specific format for doing that. Most documented vessels have it posted in the engine room, and it has to be done in such a way that if it's ever removed it would be relatively easy to tell it was removed. You also have to post the vessel name and hailing port on the stern.

If your boat isn't a Documented vessel, as far as I know all states require the state registration numbers and annual renewal/expiration decal to be posted on both sides of the hull near the bow.

Tim hasn't posted since November of 2012...
