Any of you fellow new yorkers...I am going to look at a West marine/zodiac RU310HP dink tomorrow, but will need to register it if we buy it. The boat has never been used, and should have the manufacture plate on it somewhere, but what else should I do at the time of purchase to make sure I can register this thing? The DMV form looks straight forward, and I was going to just write up a basic bill of sale for the seller to sign saying she sold it to me, HIN noted, sale date, and price paid.

Has the dinghy ever been registered? If it has, you should get the paperwork from the seller. It will have the registration numbers that DMV will need. If not, you may have an issue getting it through the DMV system. In that case, the Bill of sale, year of the boat and HIN number from boat will be all you have to go with.

Never registered, or used for that matter. She said she has the manufactures state of origin, and we will write up and sign a bill of sale. According to this doc--https://dmv.ny.gov/forms/mv821b.pdf, I think that should be enough. As I'm sure you've experienced, who knows with NYS

Just did this about two weeks ago. You need a bill of sale with the year of the boat and the HID number on the bill of sale. You need the dmv form to register (I forgot which one off the top of my head but it's pretty easy off the website), and there is also another form for the sales tax. They are both in the same website. If the boat is new, a certificate of origin is needed as well. This usually comes with the boat itself. Pay the sales tax if you didn't at dmv and you should get the sticker and new regi before you walk out.

Excellent, thanks. I wasn't sure exactly what needed to be on the bill of sale.

Are you buying from a dealer or individual ? if dealer, the can assign the MSO to you, if it is filled out to another purchaser, they will have to register and pay sales tax before they can transfer to you. This is the way the state gets their tax income from ALL sales. If the individual has never registered it, legally its not theirs to sell, it still belongs to the original dealer

I have never registered mine.... It is a tender to go from the vessel to shore and back so it doesn't need to be independently registered in the great state of Washington.

jesus what a nightmare. This is a CL buy, of a boat that was never used but purchased a while ago from west marine. I guess I'll get whatever I can and try to register it.

NYS DMV is a PIA when it comes to registering, well, anything, but much more so with a boat since they don't handle them nearly as frequently as cars. If you have the State of Origin and a Bill of Sale with the HIN and price you should be able to wrestle a registration sticker away from the DMV clerk.....once you hand over the fee and sales tax. Good luck.

Everything said above, plus show up at the DMV with a photo of the rib, and a photo of the transom plate clearly showing H.I.N. and manufacturer. I was able to register a dink once with those two items and a bill of sale and no MSO or previous registration. With all the paper work and pics, you will definitely come away with a sticker.

Great, I knew a bunch of fellow NY'ers had been through this. Thanks everyone

We are from Canada and I was stopped on Lake Union by the police and told I needed my dinghy with a 2.5HP registered even if it was part of my cruiser.
Was he wrong. This was the only time I have ever been stopped we had on PFDs and all the safety equipment. They did not ask to see any thing.

One of our dockmates bought an intek 10ft inflatable toy and slapped a trolling motor on it. They stopped the kid and made them go register it, this was on irondequoit bay in rochester

Here she is. One of the "real" zodiac's from west marine RU310HP. Brand new, all accessories, never used. Probably too big for our 290, but I only paid 450 so I had to give it a try

Replying to Northern. We are in the same area as Mark (have met Mark and Lina at a Sea Ray rendezvous) and I would say he's mostly right. I believe technically in the State of Washington if your outboard is less than 12 HP (or 15?) it doesn't need to be registered, and if it is used as a tender only going ship to shore (as Mark described) it doesn't have to be registered. However, if its used for anything other than direct ship to shore it's supposed to be registered. It's mostly luck whether you are going to be stopped or not. No idea why you were stopped with such a small outboard. We never registered our Zodiac with a 15 HP and were never stopped - just lucky I guess. We just registered our new Apex 11 with 20 HP motor primarily because we plan to use it a lot away from our boat and were bound to be stopped by the CG.

Great price and a good looking dink!

Thanks! Another question, probably not worth another thread. I now have to figure out what to do with the damn thing when underway. We have what appears to be half of a davit system. How would these work with an inflatable? Obviously I'd have to pvc weld/secure the hook side to the dink, I just have never seen that in action

Related question, how are folks putting your registration numbers on your inflatables? I just purchased a new one, having had a few before, and trying everything from rubber letters, to registration plates, to painted on registration. Always have to deal with the state registration sticker also.

Has anyone built a better mousetrap for this seemingly simple issue?

I just got mine from www.boatnumberplate.com. Super easy and quick delivery. The number plate is done on one strip for each side so you don't have to align individual numbers, and there is a place for the state registration sticker. I selected the self stick option and installation was easy.
