Registering a boat out of state

Legally most states require you to register it in their state if you keep the boat there more than 50 percent of the year.

There was a thread here a while ago debating the merits of documenting a boat. I personally bought two boats that were documented at the time. For the first boat I spent the money to undocumented it because I had to register it in that state even though it was documented with the CG. For my current boat I spent the money to transfer and keep it documented because this state does not require you to register a documented boat.

Many states require that documented vessels also be registered in their state.

The documentation process is often a requirement of the bank if they have a loan on the bank. in theory, if a documented vessel is stolen having it documented makes it more difficult to sell and easier for the police to recover it.

I'm not sure about that, but for the very small cost of documenting a vessel, I don't see how it would hurt to keep it documented.
