Recent events affecting CSR ??

the price of gasoline certainly affects all boaters. here in Canada, gasoline is over $ 4.75 Usgal for over two years. remember that the 340 Sundancer was the most popular boat during the 2000s. things have changed. I'm glad with my "little" 280 Sundancer. With twin V6, I can expect to do more boating during the next years at 1.6 mpg.

Gary,

Nice to see you back in action here. I was expecting some sort of pot-stirring comment but you actually penned something that I find thought provoking. Well done!

Well.. I did go out and buy a new $700 60" LED TV on black Friday and holy cow! My $5000 50" Panasonic from 10 years ago was really crappy and I didn't realize it.

So there... Our boating forum is down to discussing $700 TV's and $125 portable generators from Harbor Freight.

I just wish I could put my Volt powertrain in my boat. It would be enough power to get me where I have to go on the lake, and the return trip to the dock , burning no gas. Since I'm paying $350.00 a season for shorepower, the marina would foot the total cost of fueling my propulsion.

Never be Coasty approved as they are a fire Hazard. :smt043

Here's my 2 cents for what it's worth. I do think there has been a big culture shift in our country over the last 5 years. Back in 2007, there was a different atmosphere in this country (and this website). Everyone was "richer" and people worked flipping real estate, taking out cash in their ever appreciating homes and doing other entrepreneurial things. Everyone felt like they could reach for the stars and get there... If someone was successful, we patted them on the back because we knew we were going to get there too. We all thought we could beat Donald Trump. Things came crashing down and the world changed and our country went from celebrating success and aspiring to be successful to a "screw you if you have any signs of wealth." We have created a culture of desperation. Not "desperation" in the sense of buying food, but "desperation" in the sense we will be stuck where we are for the rest of our lives.

I would suggest that the constant hammering of "the top 2%" and divide over the last 5 years makes discussing boating in a widely public forum almost "embarrassing." When was the last time anyone discussed buying a new (not used) boat on here? If someone came out and said "Hey.. check out the new 580 DB I just bought," I guarantee you most people on here would say to themselves "f--- you." Or how about if someone said "I just plunked down $35K on new electronics." ? Frankly, I just don't see how this will ever return in a "public" fashion with people being told over and over they are being screwed by people that can afford a new 30+ foot boat. We've gone from encouraged to take chances and work hard to being p!ssed off because company XYZ has 2 corporate planes (which mind you takes a lot of people to build and maintain corporate planes). I listened to our country's vice president lecture a crowd how "millionaires write off their yachts" and everyone applauded.. Let me give people a clue... the only people writing off boats on their taxes are the people that are probably not millionaires. There is a upper limit of mortgage interest deduction of $1 million and if someone has a $4 million dollar boat and a big house, I'm pretty sure they can't finance it all and write it off... that's the current laws... but this rhetoric makes people believe it and be bitter.

Times today are sort of like of like back with "alcohol" was banned and people retreated to private clubs and didn't discuss it in the open.

I'm not trying to make this thread about "politics." What I am saying is the politics have changed the culture in the country....

My 2 cents.

Did you buy a new boat without telling us?

I think of this forum as a sort of club that I have made many friends from. I don't just come here for boating info, although it is great for that, but also to check on friends projects and make plans to get together. I really like seeing the progress on Alex's a/c upgrade as well as his spreadsheets (Haha) and thank the lord that I will never have to do a project like that!! I don't see it "dying a slow death" but just having natural ebb & flow. It's the holidays, people are busy. It probably will pick up a bit in Feb. as people start to look forward to spring projects or wrap up winter ones.

Thanks Todd!

IMO, there are several things going on to cause the slowdown. For the most part it’s a usual trend for the Northeast region boaters being tied up with winterizing their boats and catching up on things and projects that were on hold all summer season. I fit in to the category very well. My to-do list is getting longer and the time to handle it is always an issue. It’s a normal routine for me, but this year somehow I ended up with way too many projects. The time to do analyses, research and physical labor pretty much takes me away from other things and that’s why I’m not as active on the forum. I’m looking forward to change that in the near future.

Sandy made a huge impact in lives of many people here on CSR and I can imagine that most people’s priorities simply have shifted putting CSR and other social sites in the background. I don’t know too many people who weren’t impacted by the storm one way the other. Even those with minimum physical damage to their properties were affected somehow (e.g. offices being running in DR mode and the workload is very different, etc.) and the “normal fall routine” has changed, to say the least. It goes without saying that those who sustained a lot of damage focus on restoring their properties and posting about some exciting boating events or projects is the last thing on their minds. So, Sandy alone is a huge contributor to making the “having natural ebb & flood” more dramatic.

I totally hear Gary’s point, but my personal view on this is slightly different. I am who I am and do what I do and regardless of politics and how they brainwash the public I try no allow it to affect my life. I try to maintain my lifestyle, including my hobbies. Obviously the recent policies have put some “sticks in our wheels”, but I try to keep positive outlook and keep the “wheels spinning”.

I hope that this holiday season will bring some positive spirit in people lives and we all will be able once again think about things that we love (being on our boats and traveling in to new and exciting destinations).

I have a feeling it's not a SR.

Screw you and your new TV...

LoL.. Just kidding

I agree with Mike and Todd... great perspective Gary and So TRUE!

Yeah....I guess there are some of those types out there. They get defriended pretty quick. FB has become more of a source for news for me. When you like pages like Sea Ray, boattest.com, etc you get their latest announcements. The Car and Driver page is pretty cool too. Every corporation has a FB page these days. You would be surprised how much good info you get.

I don't know about all you lazy people, but i've been busy putting in a new kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms and flooring.

All you peasants with your old kitchens can kiss my ass.

I moved into a new house, painted the entire inside, ripped ALL of the floors out and replaced them with tile and hardwood. Still have some baseboard to complete. I need to start hiring this crap out so I can work on my boat more!

HUMPH - looks just like a house that a real 410 guy would own!

The apt, although I have replaced a lot of stuff on the boat.
