We’ve been generator challenged this season – first with the generator surging and second that it only runs for a few minutes at a time. The surging was fixed with a complete tear down and ultrasonic cleaning from a local marina – varnish in the jets. When reassembled the idle screw that sets the governor speed was changed and it now seems to run fast. I’ve searched for any procedures on (re)setting the speed (3600 RPM) and/or frequency but haven’t found anything. Any one adjust theirs? I’m also assuming I’m going to have to find a tachometer. This is a 2003 Kohler 5E. As for the short running duration … low oil! Thanks

Hi Tom,

I'm not sure about the Kohler 5E, but my Westerbeke 4.5BCG puts out 60hz when running at 1800 rpm. I googled up wall and outlet current for Canada and I believe this is also what your generator should output. It's not necessary to measure the RPM of the generator, simply take a meter and measure what's coming out of the wall socket on your boat.

If you read 60hz at the wall outlet your generator should be running at the correct RMP's. I purchased my meter at HomeDepot for about $90 Klein Tools.

a Westerbeke genny will run at a lower rpm than a Kohler genny....that is one reason the Westerbeke genny is quieter....not sure what the correct rpm is for a Kohler genny....

The Kohler spec sheet says the correct rpm is 3600 for 60hz. Its the meter I'll have to find.

Thanks!
