This past weekend the radar would not power on. I took the screen out and checked the tube type fuses on the backside and one was blown. I have no idea why it blew? While I have the dash apart though I was wondering if I should have the batteries replaced in there and the gps? The boating neighbor was having his done again and ours have never been done. He was having a local shop do his while I've heard of some people sending them into Raytheon. One guy said they kinda updated his a little bit. I have no idea what they would've updated though on an old unit.
Has anyone been down this road and have any advise. I wouldn't mind sending them into Raytheon but not at this time of the season. Winter is the time to do that. Bottom line is it worth sending them in to Raytheon for better service and possible freebies or should I just have the local guy do it for a faster turnaround?

I sent both my RL70 pathfinder radar and L760 plus fishfinder in for rebuild. The RL70 and L760 both had the chip holders before I sent them in. I had upgraded firmware/software done. So we went from a L760 unit to the L770RCD with RayChart and the radar display (which is not working currently) with a newer Pathfinder RL70RC Plus... (had the old pathfiner no plus). I also had a DSM250 from my old boat. and now it ties in with my fishfinder digitally... I'm very happy with the work but was dissapointed that it took so long (one month due to screw ups by them). They fixed it all by replacing the L760 to the L770 instead of replacing the motherboard in the L760.

I'm good for the next several years now.. barring any failures.

You didn't specify what you have, nor how old it is. You can call RM tech support and give them the info and they should be able to tell you the estimated life of the internal batteries and whether there are any firmware updates available for it.

Sorry I don't recall the exact model but it's all factory equipment for a 1998 Sport Yacht. I'll have to check the exact model numbers.

Probably all the XX series stuff. Probably not worth updating. That stuff was all outsourced and built by others. Some of it was OK, some was... less than OK. Save you money until you're ready to upgrade it, then look into some new stuff.

The battery in my GPS sensor died three years ago. I just enter my starting lat/long into the unit and it starts up fine. It's not worth the effort to change it out until I upgrade everything... or make it the next owner's problem.

Best regards,
Frank

Update to this. It is the Raytheon 41XX. I tried replacing the fuse last night in the radar but it keeps blowing the new ones. I removed the unit and going to take it to a local electronics service place. I hope this doesn't turn into a replacement scenario. That would be great but not for the pocket!

Let me know if it's a goner. I have some 41xx stuff that we're not using any more
(everything is now HSB2), like an open array, and a green screen radar head.

Still have to get in touch with the guy at the local electronics store and have him take a look at it. This unit will HAVE to be repaired or replaced with a used one as we are not ready to completly upgrade the electronics.
