Hello All,

I have a brand new, in the box, Raymarine P70R (not the newer P70RS) I'm looking to trade for a new or gently used P70, 8 button. I have the one depicted on the left and am looking for the one depicted on the right. Please reply to this post or send me a private message. Thank you in advance.

Just curious because I am replacing my previous setup that has an old push button ST7001 control unit. The new Evolution autopilot I ordered comes with the P70RS similar to above left. I thought the push button control units were marketed more toward sailors?
Is this your preference? I have to admit I am used to the +10/-10 control buttons.
Thanks

Hi Jaws,

Raymarine has indeed marketed the P70/P70R (the R stands for rotary dial) and P70S/P70SR that way. I too am replacing an ST7001+ and love the +10/-10 buttons. Near as I can tell, it's a matter of preference only. The rotary dial acts as a mini steering wheel where one can "drive" the boat without having to touch the helm wheel. The overall functionality of the push button seems to be a no brainer benefit for sail boat operators who may have less time to sit and dial in a heading. That said, I will continue my search. I went to the forum because, while the newer hardware profile P70S's are abundant, there are only a few P70's currently available. The P70 model has near same functionality as the newer P70S. It is, however, an exact match if one has the slightly older eSeries MFD's and i50 or i70 hardware profile. They are now most commonly found on the eBay/Amazon sites. I scooped up one of the last P70R's I found in the hopes of trading for a P70 from someone who is not smoking crack and trying to get $800. They should be around $350-$400. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the explanation; it makes sense. Out on the open lake I often use the +10/-10 for new course selection and have gotten used to that. I never considered going with the "sailboat version".
Since you have the eS screens then the P70/P70R matches better. I am replacing my E Classic screens with Axiom and Axiom Pro and in essence will start over so the P70R/P70RS will work.
I'll watch for your unit but with winter boat shows, you might talk to the Raymarine tech guys at the booth and see if they can source something??

I have the ST-8001 head, and make any AP adjustments (crab traps, and weekend warriors) with the rotary knob. it's more intuitive to me, and I can make big corrections if needed.
