I picked up a used GPSMap 640 (5") screen a couple weeks ago. Our new boat comes with a Raymarine c80 with the sounder module (no radar).

Which should I keep? The garmin is nice, I like the touch screen, but the display is a little small. I haven't had the opportunity to try the RM as the boat won't be splashed till the weekend.

How old are you (no need to answer)? I am 50+ and can hardly read the details on my 7" Raymarine SL70CRC anymore. Going to upgrade to at least a 9" whenever I can afford it. I also have a Garmin 441s on my small boat so I use both manufacturer's stuff. Frankly, function wise I just adapt to whatever one I'm using. I know there are Garmin folks who would never have Raymarine and vice-versa, but they're both functionally just fine. For me - the size and display clarity will be the driving factor in my upgrade.

I'm 36. But while underway I find I have to concentrate more on the 5" screen of the Garmin.

I just hate to get rid of the Garmin and find it was the better unit.

If you can afford to keep both for a while then try them both out and see which one you like best. As I mentioned, I find "better" is really a personal choice when it comes to functions of these. Reliability wise my 9 year old Raymarine has had no issues and the 3 year old Garmin has had no issues.

Thanks Bill!!

If I sell the Sea Ray next week I may have to defer delivery/sale of the Garmin until the following week. :)

I have used both different models the biggest reason I use the Garmin is we've had them in autos for years without any problems and their customer service is easy to deal with as long as your the registered owner if the used Garmin you picked up is registered to someone else you need them to transfer it to your name or Garmin will not support it or even help trouble shoot any problems.
