I recently installed a c-80 chartplotter and radar system in my boat. The boat came with the sc 5000 from the factory. My question is how do I get the gps data to the sc 5000. My buddy has a 37 Formula with the same set up and is able to get much more data, as well as more accurate speed and fuel numbers. Any help with parts needed as well as procedures would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, John.

If I recall correctly, it is a blue and white wire that needs to be connected to the nema 183 input. I did this exact thing on my 340. You are correct in that yoo get allot of data that will be displayed on the smartcraft. I the smartcraft manaul talks about it.

Thank you for your reply. I went to the boat this morning and located the blue and white wires from the smartcraft, as well as the brown and yellow nmea wires. While I was at it, I also connected the vhs to the gps sensor. It is amazing how much more data is available.

ThankYou very much...John

I have the same set up (c80/sc 5000) I hooked up the bl/wh wires am getting nema info. however on the sc the speed sceen still reads (paddle) as sensor. Now here's my question I BEEN UN ABLE TO FIGURE OUT how to change the preference from the paddle wheel to the gps? any thoughts?

Does this work in the "other direction"? Can you get your engine data from the smart craft system displayed on the C80?

Although not directed to me the answer is no the raymarine units are c80 are nema 0183 the new e unit are nema 2000 and that what would display engine info. so its only one way also remember sc 5000 is priopratary to mercury and will not talk out to anthing else. it can only receive.

your welcome I pick this info up from another thread on this site and ck it with MM tech because I to wanted to know and do what you were thinking.

I have the same issue. according to page 3-5 of the manual, smartcraft will take the signal from whatever sensor it detects, either the gps, paddle, or pitot. I am waiting for a call back from mercury marine on this. My question for them was how do I make the system default to the gps?

"Speed Sensors – This window shows the sensor that is currently sending the
speed signal. The speed sensor is automatically displayed based on which
sensors are available." Page 3-5 of the manual

Under the setup page there is a paddle wheel changeover speed setting, have you tried that yet?

I see something for "paddle frequency" but I think that is so as to read the paddle wheel. i was thinking about disconnecting the speed sensor to see if it picks up the gps. My friend has a formula with the same system, and he said his speed is calculated by the gps. I think its time for another call to mercury !

OK. After calls to Mercury and Raymarine, I think we have an answer to the gps/paddle wheel issue. As per Andrew at Mercury, when the system is properly configured, the speed sensor should default to the the gps. The issue is that the factory default set up for the raymarine gps and c 80 is with the nmea outputs all turned "on". As per the techs, you need to go into the c-80 system set up,right arrow over to system integration, right arrow over to "nmea output set up", then find "vtg sentence" and set it to "off". This should then allow smartcraft to view the speed data from the gps.
I may just go try this later.

I have a little more information on this. The reason why we don't see a way to select between the paddle wheel and the gps is because you can't. the system relies on BOTH sensors. In the smartcraft sensors screen, you will see "transisition speed" in the menu. The transisition speed is when system view stops looking at the paddle and starts looking at the gps.the default setting is 25 mph. I think i will be lowering my setting to 15-18 mph.

I did go to the boat, and as per the raymarine tech, all of my nmea outputs were on. I switched off the output as instucted and took the boat for a slow ride. When I didn't see any gps data, I docked the boat and came home with all the manuals and that is where I found this addl. information.

I guess I have another reason for a ride. I will keep you posted, John.

Someone posted on this forum several months ago that the system looks for GPS at startup, and if it doesn't detect GPS, it defaults to paddle wheel, or something like that. When you start it up, is your GPS already on? Mine always calculates economy based on paddle wheel, but determines distance and time to go to waypoint off of GPS (obviously). I'm going to try to lower my changeover speed to the minimum setting. At any rate, I think the speedo gauge always reads paddle wheel, right?

Also, did you guys know that you can replace the sensor in the thru-hull to a model that checks the speed of molecules as they pass by in place of a spinning paddle wheel? Anyone ever try one of those? Apparently all you have to do is pull the old one out, put the new one in, and connect the wires at the junction (same plug).

I have the smartcraft 5000 and agree you have to set the changeover speed. I set mine to 5mph and it's much better than the paddle fluctuating, and also will drive the speedometer from the GPS as well.

Is the RayMarine NMEA 183 Multiplexer required to hook up both your VHS and the Smartcraft system? Did you buy a cable that comes from the C80 NMEA interface plug? I checked on mine, there is a 5 pole socket for the NMEA interface.

I would like to connect both my Northstar VHS and the Smartcraft.

Thanks in advance...

I'm still in the process of sorting it all out. I will keep you posted.

the difference between nema 2000 is and 0183 is that 2000 has no ploarity and is bi directional 0183 is directional (in/out) and is pos/neg on wire. To splice 0183 all you have to do is keep the polarity and direition straight. Raymarine recommends using "scoth lock" connetors. There is no reson for a mutiplexer.
