My 2001 380 DA has the original Ray VHF220. It has failed finally and I am looking to replace. As I understand it, the model 220 and the dinosaur that it is, were much larger in physical size than current models out there. Once I decide on a radio, I will need an adapter plate to mount. I was quoted $60 for a plastic mounting adapter (custom), and while I understand it is custom made, that seems a bit high for a plate made of acrylic. Any suggestions on a source that would be a bit more reasonable once I decide on a replacement unit? I am not interested in starboard.
I've not done this, but I have always thought that a synthetic cutting board from a kitchen place would make a good adapter plate, assuming you find a suitable color. Easy to cut, easy to sand. Inexpensive.
I know boatoutfitters.com does custom trim panels, although I think they are starboard. The price seemed decent, unfortunately for me to ship up to Canada made it too expensive, but it may work for you. I just ordered a piece of black plexiglass from Amazon and hope I can cut it cleanly https://www.boatoutfitters.com/custom-trim-plate
I 3dprinted my adapter. Ray Marine VHF replacement I can try to find the file or print you one if it will help.
You don't mention where the $60 quote came from? But try fpmarine.com will make them for you. That said I think $60 is a good price. I have had a lot of "little" and large panels made and I have paid a lot more then that. Most places will charge more for acrylic as well.
Following as I purchase my 380 last year with a credit for the broken one. I started a thread on the same subject but can't find it now. @Chris-380 you can have mine if he doesn't sell you his.
What has died on your old one? We have a similar Raymarine and did not want to change the look. Our radio was receiving, but not transmitting. It turned out the microphone within the the handheld was bad. I found a replacement on for about $7, had a local guy solder it in. It works great now.
I can appreciate the efforts some of you guys go through to keep these 20+ year old pieces of tech alive. But you're missing out on a lot of new features (safety) by not upgrading to something current. A nice, new, fully featured VHF with GPS/DSC can cost less than a tank of gas...or a couple really nice bottles of bourbon.
I am on a 12000 acre inland lake. When I go to change my vhf radio, I will be spending thousands to redo the complete layout with new mdf’s. This year I bought a full winter cover, last year as a full camper enclosure and new biminis…. On a lake my size, Electronics is not as important as other items, at least for me….
Thank you, I appreciate the responses. The Ray 220 is intermittent sometimes it will turn on and sometimes not. Sometimes it turns itself off randomly, so not a reliable safety belt. I will be replacing and can’t wait to have the newer technology with AIS, DSC, etc. Chris-I have not picked out a new VHF just yet but I am researching options at this point. You can certainly have whatever parts or pieces you want, however I won’t sell to you but you can have them for free. After all, this radio is headed for the recycle bin in the sky. I’ll circle back when I rip into it.
Our situation was not money, I had bought a new Icom to replace it, and had actually installed it, I just hated the look, we have 2 other Raymarine units on the same panel. The only thing we are missing is the DSC, but 90% of our boating is on the ICW or less than 10 miles offshore with a group of boats.
Over the winter I change out my old 2004 era Ray230 and replaced it with a Ray90. A bit pricey to maintain the remote mount look. But wow, what a difference in clarity and static reduction.
