These are my raw water strainers I think, these needs to be cleaned/ replaced?

I assume the procedure for that is simply
1. Close sea cock
2. Unbolt from underside
3. Clear/rinse
Then in reverse to replace?

Yes, they all look like that, yes, I know I've got to get onto it :) I think (well, I know there are no strainers/cocks for them) my riser intakes are thru the drive system - so its only the A/C, genset and electric flush head with these strainers.

I guess I didn't really put a proper question in there.

Am I correct in assuming these are raw water strainers? They're first in line beyond the sea cocks for head, genset and aircon.

Assuming they are the raw water strainers I think they are, is there anything particularly I need to know before cleaning them?

They don't seem particularly "Easy access", am I right in thinking the only way is to undo the bolts under the join rim?

As always, any advice for a first time owner gratefully accepted :)

Access is thru the top cap. Close the sea cock, Unscrew the top cap with the necessary tool and remove the sea strainer inside.... Clean the sea stainer, usually achievable with just a garden hose. Then you can take a small brush and go around the clear plastic site glass and clean that.

Like Cod said. On topside should be three equally spaced holes on the cap. You will need a spanner wrench. Mine looked like yours when I first got the boat. Pick up a bottle brush from the kitchen section of wherever to clean the inside of the strainer.

Also, my caps were very well seated. I had to work at them for a while to break the seal loose. Ultimately I needed a rubber mallet, and after enough tapping I was able to get the top off. Just be aware of how much you torque each strainer if it comes to it, so you don't damage the mounts.

Good luck.

Hmmm.... I think I brought the wrong tool.

I brought hex keys, but they're circular holes. Any tips for a tool?

Fantastic, thanks.

Not sure where I'm going to get one, but at least I know what I'm look for now :)

No West Marine over here, not much over here at all, really. I can't seem to see any Australian stockist with one either. Bugger.

Ah well, I'm putting together a list of bits I need to ship over to service my generator so I'll just add this in.

Heck, the PO might have even left one on the boat somewhere. But I doubt he ever used it.

You can also just use a long, square shank screwdriver, lay it across a couple of the raised spots in the caps and hold it flat while turning. Mine were super tight as well and thats how I got them off.

I have the same strainers.
Large channel lock wrench will also work to remove the cap.
When reinstalling grease up the threads so, next time the cap comes off easily.
The water seal is accomplished by two "O rings" in the cap and need not be too tight.
I can remove mine by hand and check them often for debris.

I take mine on/off by hand but with gloves on as the brass casting has sharp edges on it that will slice your hand. Rinse the basket out then reinstall. - Ed

Did hardware stores with no luck and tried some makeshift ideas that didn't pan out. Have someone fabricating me a purpose build tool now :)

Anyway, another question. One of my sea cock handles if stuck in the open position. I've been adding a decent spray of RP7 every time I'm on board, but I'm not really getting anywhere. I can get about a half/three quarter inch of turn on it.

Anyone got any good ideas to close/lubricate this sea cock? Thankfully it feeds only the toilet, so there is always the bucket option ;)

Please explain the seacock feeding the toilet? I've never heard or a raw water toilet. They usually run out of the water tank. If that seacock is labeled waste or toilet it is your macerator discharge witch in my local waters must b closed at all times except a couple miles offshore . If I am cought with it open its a heavy fine

Absolutely some manufacturers use the sea water to feed the toilet. I have done several bare boat charters that are set up this way. I'm not a fan as it creates an odor.....

Hence my confusion when I couldn't find a holding tank, but then I got hold of the sea ray cruiser manual and saw the "international" option (this being a 220v config). Someone on here pointed out it would be quite expected to see international head go with international wiring. Mind you, I've never found the "head breaker" anywhere.

Any thoughts on closing that sea cock?
