Raw Water Strainer Baskets

I will spare you all the details but suffice to say that neither Perko Customer Service or SR Customer Service knew that my boat has unique raw water strainer baskets!

After a lot of research I learned that Perko (the manufacturer) make a unique raw water strainer for Sea Ray - and it's probably common to larger gas and diesel boats from at least 1997 forward. The strainers themselves feature a unique casting for use only by SR. My strainers were damaged and corroded when I bought the boat in May '07 so I tried to get replacements and, since this item is rarely purchased, nobody seemed to know that the dimensions are unique.

So If you need a raw water strainer basket - tell your Perko dealer this story. My baskets are Perko #6467BSKA and yours are likely the same. This basket is approximately 1-1/2" longer than the standard #8 Perko strainer (the diameter is identical) and you definitely want the correct model to minimize abrasion and damage to a replacement strainer basket.

My experience owning a Sea Ray is they often have unique products to them that are difficult to get replacement parts. Like a light bulb in my 260. The dealer was the only place to get it. Some other brands tend to use more common parts.

Lost my waste cap . Purchased 2 different brands 2" cap. None fit right...

HAd to go back to dealer...its an attwood cap....

Well, they are not just on diesels any more... the newer 6.2 Horizon's require more cooling than can be had going through the outdrive. Here is a photo of mine and as it sits in relation to the engine...

Does it look similar to this?

Warren,
In the end wasn't it SEARAY Customer service that hooked u up with what u needed ?

These guys do a great job for us ...

Yes it was Rob. His name is Jason Brennan and he worked so hard to solve this one that I sent him a note of appreciation with a Cc. to his boss at Sea Ray. Great customer service effort - he kept calling Perko on my behalf until he finally spoke with their Sales Mgr at Perko, he measured the basket from inventory to confirm dimensions, he even went out to the shop and photographed one beside a ruler and e-mailed me the shot.

Once the correct part was found he assured me that even if the manufacturer couldn't or wouldn't sell me the baskets - to just let him know and Sea Ray would get the job done! Outstanding. It may sound corny but it makes me kind of proud to be a SR owner..
Cheers,
Warren

Doug,

I've got some questions about the cooling set up in your photos........

1. The strainer assembly appears to be either cast aluminum or stainless and has bronze or brass elbows in it. These metals are so far apart on the galvanic chart that you may see some dissimilar metal corrosion.
2. The strainer, and the sea cock do not appear to be connected to the bonding system on the boat, but maybe I just cannot see the wires from the angle the pix are taken.
3. There appears to be a galvanized steel T and nipples in the hose from the valve to the strainer. Should it be bonded and shouldn't it be bronze?

I'm not being critical.......just want to head off problems.

thats interesting...my sea strainer and granted my boat is diesel is a high density plastic boat the strainer and basket....metal????

I am in the same situation. Dealer told me they wouldn't sell just the cap and I had to buy the whole deck plate. You wouldn't by chance have the part number would you?

Looks like that strainer housing has a grounding symbol cast right into the side just above the mounting screw so you can "bond it"

Is that a plastic garden hose shutoff valve (on the flushing tee) being used to hold back raw water supply below the water line.?????

2 Can,
U can certainly get only the cap. My cap might be different from urs but ill look at what I bought.

Frank,

Good call. Maybe someone can shed some light on the dissimilar metals (pictured). If they are Bronze and Aluminum, and especially without any bonding via galvanic isolator or common ground/zinc, then you have a potential problem with corrosion.

Here is the "Galvanic Chart" from Boat/US:

Cathodic: Graphite
Monel
Stainless Steel
Bronze
Brass
Copper
Tin
Mild Steel
Aluminum
Zinc

A fitting made of a metal at the bottom of the scale will waste away in seawater if it is in contact with a fitting made of a metal at the top. Fittings will be damaged more quickly in saltwater than in freshwater, but it is also possible for galvanic corrosion to take place when dissimilar metals are out of the water. In general, the farther apart the two metals are on the scale, the more likely the anodic metal will be damaged.

Aside from Franks notable catch on cathodic isses and the seriously defcient missing ground strap, who would want to have to take socket wrench to those four bolts to remove this cap to clean the basket?

I'd sure look for a set of stainless wing bolts so you can get this thing off and on without tools. Also, the anti siphon mechanism between the seacock and strainer basket shows like cast iron household pipes! If so, these will disappear in sea water and should be changed out to marine bronze with proper bonding.
