OK guys, here is another dumb one... The Clarion 6 1/2" speakers mounted in the arch of my '04 320DA rattle and vibrate when I'm on plane. I can stop the noise by pressing the grille in against the tweeter frame. I want to place a some foam tape in between to stop the vibration but I can't figure out how to get the damn grilles off. I checked clarion.com and the 2 page manual doesn't mention it. I know some of you audiophiles riped these P.O.S. out, you had to take the grille off, help a brother out????

BTW: I bought a XM Direct Box and a Clarion cable and get XM on my "Sirius Ready" receiver including track and artist info on the remote, pretty sweet!

Jay,
I had a cabin speaker replaced on my Clarion, and the service tech had to turn the grill counterclockwise about 1/8 a turn to remove the grill. It is still a bear.
I'd call your dealer, and speak to a tech whose done it, as I'm sure there is a technique.

I'd like to know how to remove those grilles too................so any information anyone can supply will be appreciated.

Clarion Speakers ... Like Poof!

After reading this thread I went after my Clarions that rattle and make honking noises and have not given a minutes listening enjoyment since I bought the boat used. Low and behold when I got the grille off, the speaker cone fluttered to the deck like confetti! Under the grille the tissue thick cone had dried out, become brittlee and simply tore its self apart.

BTW, After getting the first one off by turning as suggested earlier, it was not an easy twist. I inspected the back of the grille to learn it doesn't twist on that model, 100Watt two cone. To get off the 6 1/2" white grills, on mine there is a small open slot on the bottom of the speaker grille. Insert a longer Screwdriver into that slot and pull slowing up towards you, while twisting the grille to the left, the grille will POP off.

I checked the other three in the cockpit and yuppers, every speaker had self destructed.

Off ot the The BIG W chain store to get some decent speakers ...

More on that later

I need to get one of mine off because the speaker opening is a source of water leaking into the storage comparment under the cockpit sink. The problem is the speaker is mounted low and almost directly over the cockpit sink countertop with maybe an inch clearance under the speaker grill so there is no way to get a screw driver under there even a stubby one. I suppose I can make an angled piece out of a coat hanger and that might work. Or maybe it's time to buy one of those right angled screw drivers that I have never had any use for............... until now. :smt043

Hard to get at Grill Release

The speaker you have is a Woofer (tweeter is immediately next door in your photo) and is somewhat different than the two cone two way speaker I was referring too earlier.

But that stated, and you've concluded the frille will not rotate to freedom, feel under the grille cover for a open slot if its there then it should open in similar manner as I'd described. Given the slot exists and the close tolerance with the seat cover I'd try to get a "Stubby" driver in there and pull to pop the cover. If that doesn't do it, then try a thin blade screw driver under the lip of the grille with a wooden paint stick as a fulcrum under the screwdriver to prevent the driver from chipping the gelcoat, and note the driver should not be inserted more than 1/2 inch so as to NOT get into the cone.

If you can get in one driver insert and other larger one beside it in the same space and begin sliping it around snapping the grille off the lugs.

If you can't get enough working room, you may have to pop off the seat back from behind to get at it, but that looks like it could be a bigger chore than getting the grille off, IMHO.

Good luck

Dave,
I looked at mine yesterday, and there is a slot about 1/4" long at the bottom of the cover.
As I recall, the tech pushed in on that to release the locking tab, and twisted the grill, which was still tough to get off.
Because of the location of yours, you may try heating and bending the tip of a cheap "throw away" screwdriver to access the slot.

Hi Dave. I had to remove my sboard speaker and had the same dilemma. It took me a while, but eventually with enough pressure and twisting motion I was able to remove the grill w/out a screwdriver. I was mentally ready however for breakage and replacement if it came to that in the removal process.
