Different type of post but do any of you use radar detectors while driving? I use to use an Escort Passport but haven't in years. Recently I just got lucky with a speeding ticket, 40 in a 25, not a school zone. This has happened a few times and I know my time has run out on this.

The LEO's are everywhere locally and are told to hammer the locals and not the tourists. This frustrates the hell out of me, especially since I donate to all of the local Agencies. Because of that I was told they are being told to not let the locals get away with flashing the card(s) and ticket.

Anyway I was thinking of getting an installed detector, the expensive ones. Figuring it will pay itself off in due time. I have lead foot and can't seem to fix it. The speed zones around me switch like crazy. I leave my house, 25, next road 40 then 25 then back to 35, next road same thing, 25 then 50 then 35 to 25 and so on. I jus tend to go the same speed when no one is in front of me and it always is way to fast.

Anyway, anyone using something locally Or just don't bother?

I've rocking the Escort Max 360 for several years now, it's saved my ass countless times. Peeps need to learn how to use the tool and that it won't prevent you from getting a ticket.

I still have one in the car and will use it occasionally. I typically run with WAZE on and that's pretty good at giving you a heads-up on most problem areas. I have the detector and would run it especially if there's little traffic out there because someone has to be the "first" and i don't want that one to be me.

I think in VA and DC they are still illegal to have operating while in a car, so you might want to be careful with that around there.

Exactly and why I was looking into an installed version that is not obvious to the traffic cops.

To your point @LTD.330, yeah people sometimes think because they have the detector they won't get a ticket. You can't be going too much over or you can't slow down in time. Especially with laser. That's where the scramblers comin handy. But there only good when other cars are around, as the officer will know you have one because of the crazy return speed etc.

Make sure they are still rocking the old Ka or even K band. I have a Randenso and it saves me but the LiDar is what most large muni's are switching to around me. Especially State boys and as you already know...if it triggers...it's already too late.

I've enjoyed the Valentine One product for about 20 years and recently upgraded to their Gen 2 and really like it. It's pretty cool that they are now very programmable and software upgradable using your phone to interface via Bluetooth.

Had a couple back in the day. Escorts, Valentines. I used to have to turn them off as the cop was walking up to give me a ticket. Useless as a reverse mortgage. Quit using years ago. About the same time I quit buying Car and Driver.

I used one years ago. Don't remember the brand. But here in Oregon, they are banned. But not always ticketed for having them. The biggest issue is there is dummy signals put up all over the place so your detector is always going off and you never really know if its the law or not. And the traffic cameras now will hit you if you are three miles over the limit. And those are at damn near every intersection.

Last ticket I got, I over paid the ticket. When they sent me a check for the overage, I tossed it. That kept the file open, so it never showed up on my driving record. 8 years later, the state put the $5 in the wildlife fund. So it still never really showed up because the violation drops after 7 years.

Camera speeds are not supposed to go on your license, they can't prove who was driving, just a fine.

Oh yeah. Nice clear clean photos of the driver from the front. Vehicle from the back. I had a boss that was driving his business partners pick up. He took the photo and had it put on t-shirts for the crew when the boss found it easier to not pay and let his partner pay for everything.

I stopped using detectors years ago and use Waze now as others have said. I was in my brothers car going to my mom's house last year and he put the address in Waze. I said since when do you not remember how to get to mom's and he said he uses it every time he's in the car to know where the cops are.

Can confirm that radar detectors are illegal in Virginia. As others have said, Waze is pretty good EXCEPT you can't (or I haven't figured out how to) expand the distance from the cop to when Waze gives the audible warning "Police reported ahead". It seems that it is currently 1/3 of a mile. You really need to look at the screen from time to time and look for the blue cop icons to pre-warn yourself.

I like Waze as well, however it's only reliable if users/drivers are submitting the radar traps (police), marking it if you will. And we don't know if they are stationary or moving. It's my assumption it's users/driver who passed the radar that are alerting Waze, am I not correct? So if there is nobody in front of me submitting the radar, it's useless.

There are only two states where they're illegal, and Oregon isn't one of them. I have a Uniden, I did quite a bit of research before buying it, and am real happy with it. Here's a pretty good forum to research them.

Wow, this thread has attention! I have used Waze when I drove 100 miles round trip everyday for work in the XJR, it’s hard to not get into the supercharger. It worked great as others have said.
Anyway this may piss everyone off as it does my kids.
Retired Navy plate hanging off the back of all my vehicles, the XC90 has my rate “HTC” as well.
Stopped 1/2 dozen times in 2-3 years no tickets.
Now if I drive 10 miles a week it’s a lot so not so worried.

I went off of what I was told, years ago from a state trooper. But they also ticketed me for having fog lights on my truck. $500 ticket. And now, almost every vehicle on the road has them. And even some hillbilly jackwagons with their LED bars driving down the roads. I stick to the 2mph over and set the cruise. Has worked so far, so good enough for me. I tend to leave the house according to distance and weather.

As Sky said, RDs are pretty much useless in MD. Cops gave up using radar a while ago. Now its all picture cameras. 40 - 70 dollars. No points. They just want your cash. They get your car. If YOU weren’t driving its up to YOU to collect the money from whoever was driving your car.
Dead serious. Once in a rare while when they aint scraping bodies off the pavement the brown shirts (Nazis) will do speed duty but its rare. They dont do radar. They just guesstimate. Don’t dispute. I learned the hard way. Farking Nazis.
Got no problem with County cops, may them State Nazis burn in hell. Every one.
