Racor booth Miami Show

Thank you sir.....grey container it is.....

edit to post.....just got back from the local Wal-mart (right accross the road from my office) with two 96 oz bottles of the Grey.....$15.20 each...plus 7% nj sales tax...

I just got off the line and purchased two of the Tell Tale Vacuum Gauges for the Main's Racors. The should be here in a few days.....boat won't be delivered for 10 days....But I'll have those shinney new gauges waiting....

Sort of....I called the number direct from the ebay listing. They were $75 each plus $4.05 shipping.....no tax....the guys name was Tim and seemed quite knowledgeable about the Racors and was very willing to help.....

I run the Grey bottle Power Service product.

First real cruise coming on Saturday--north on the river, overnight, then back to Quantico to pick up friends and head South. Only issue is re-commissioning the fresh water system; may need to park at the Marina fuel dock to get to a fresh water line. Improvise, adapt, and overcome.

Do you guys mix the grey for 3 or 6 cetane boost?

With approximately 300 gallons on board (150 gal each side) for a Cetane boost of 3, it would require 48 oz each tank, 1 silver jug per fill. That would add about $.05 per gallon to the cost of the fuel. Oh...and then there is the biocide additive....HMMMM...I have to look at the bottle for that mix..

JC:

No, I haven't installed them yet. I just received them about a week or so ago. They look really nice and they have the tell tale needle so that you don't need to check the vacuum with the engines running.

My plan is to shock the current tank of fuel with biocide and run that tank out. I will then refill the tanks and add a maintenance concentrate of biocide and run that tank about half way down. At that point, I will replace the primary and secondary filters. That is when I will install the new vacuum guages.

PS Diesel Kleen & Cetane Boost

Just wondering about this product, it sounds like a another STP like "Snake Oil", but I trust you guys practical experience.

In year round use it seems like the product from PS Diesel Kleen & Cetane Boost is the product of choice. This additive does not have a moisture emulsifier so I suspect another product will be required as well. But back to this one, is it worth the price (One Bottle to 100 gals ads $0.08 to the gal of fuel cost and double or $0.16 for a +6 Cetane boost)?

Is the price offerred by the folks in this link a good deal or not? A case is good for about 600 gals of fuel at a boost to +6 cetane.

Please share your thoughts as to the product, the deal and what water emulsifier/solubleizer would make sense. I use "Bio Guard" for alge at maintenance levels.

Does anyone know what is Cummins opinion on additives such as this one is? I know Cummins is picky about the use of alcohols for water solubilizing.

Thanks skippers, your long term practicale experience is appreciated?

Chad:

Wallmart, in NJ anyway, is a better per ounce price.

The site you referenced offers qty12 32 oz bottles which would equal qty 4 96oz bottles at Wallmart.

The wallmart price per oz is $15.20/96oz = $0.158/oz
The "Sites" price per oz is $74.70(12 *32)oz=$0.195/oz

That's more than a 20% difference in the per oz. price. The shipping may or may not equal the 7% tax I pay her in NJ.

When I figured it out last, it was about a $0.10/gallon increase for +6 Cetane boost or $0.05/gallon increase for a +3 Cetane boost.

I've been using +6.....

Gal Per Mile

Sinc eusing it have you achieved any measurable fuel economy?

The propaganda states a possible 8% in fuel efficiency improvement.

Given the typical local cost of Diesel @ @.45 a gal. a 400 gal refill would take 2 Gallons of DK boosting to +6 of DK Or 402 gals of fuel that would need to burn the equlivent of 437 gals or a 35 gal improvemnt in efficiency.

The 35 gals would cost $85.75 and the DK would have cost about 46 bucks less the cost of 2 gals of Diesel or about $80.00. So if that is realized the fuel efficiency is a bargain and in that you'd gain about 40 bucks in free fuel burn .

Did I get it right?

We discussed diesel additives at length last winter, so you may want to search for those threads, but here are some answers to the above concerns:

Don't count on the fuel additives contributing enough to the mix that you get a measurable improvement in fuel burn. This is because increased cetane has the biggest effect upon start up when the engine is cold and combustion pressure is lower. Allowing the engine to start quicker and cleaner saves wear and tear on the starter and ring gear and eliminates smoke. THee will be some efficiency improvement at cruise speeds, but it is negligable.

The major reason to use fuel additives is to replace the lubricity lost when the refinery scrubs the sulfur out of the fuel. The process both lowers diesel oil's cetane and its ability to lubricate injectors and fuel pumps, which is the medium for their lubrication. Sooner or later, the refiners will determine a standard for the effects of sulfur removal and replace those attirbutes at the refinery, but for now, the safest course of action for owners of diesel engines not labeled for use with ULSD is to add a fuel conditioner that adds lubricity and improves cetane with each tank full you buy. The added cost of fuel treatment isn't important when you consider that the fuel we are getting now is all ULSD and the cost of a pump replacement is about $3000.

Diesel Kleen does have some moisture dispursant in it, but there is a better product to use if you have water in your fuel. Power Service has a product called Diesel 9-1-1 that disperses water so well that it can safely pass through pumps and injectors.

The recommended regimen in our area is to use a Biocide in maintenance concentrations and PS Diesel Kleen for a minimum cetane improvement level of 3 #'s, then once a year shock the tanks with biocide and add 96 oz of Diesel 9-1-1 for every 200 gallons of tank capacity.

As far as cost goes, I pay $11/96 oz for Diesel Kleen and that treats 800 gal. I pay $13.50 for 96 oz of 9-1-1, so you can do the math.

As of last night walmart is charging 15.20 for 96 oz. and they seldom have the 911. I get that elsewhere.
