Ok great news from the racor people(to me anyway). I saw a prototype "tattle tale" gauge at the racor booth. Not even a part number yet and the only one at the show. 100.00 part but worth it. replaces out the old gauge and will replace the old style on new systems to come. There is a second needle that remains at the highest restriction number so when you stop the boat or do your prestart check, you will know to change your filter. This is a big help so you dont have to go in the engine room underway to see if there is a restriction. Change the filter and reset the needle on the gauge. They agree as I have experienced first hand, youre either filtering fuel and running, or not filtering fuel and are shutting down. No in between. This will be a big help, and it can be installed at the helm as well.

Couple other points I learned at the booth. On the 900 or 1000 30 or 10 micron is required. You choose its personal preferance. Teflon tape works but the teflon pipe dope offers a sealant qaulity.

These guys are great, they spent the time to disscuss the whole system and even gave me 4 free bottles of racor fuel additive.

Boy thats another thing I noticed at this show, now more than ever fuel additives were big at the show, everyone had them. Except the engine mfgs ? I'll start another topic on that.

Good info. Dave, We missed the Racor Booth as we just didn't have enough time to see everything in the Covention center. My wife wanted to see and inspect every digny out there, I was looking at systems and we were both overwhelmed at the size of the convention center (inside and out). Next time I think it's two days just there to really see everything! Keep us updated on the Racor valve-gauge. I just ordered a case of Racor filters last night and some ball valves for the bottom of my bowls to make that an easier job. Now, if I could just get down to those starboard side Racors easier - the Glendenning CableMaster is in the way. They say the most popular guy at the service area is double jointed and named "little mikey".

Dave,
Frank W had a post on ULSD. After he posted, I sent an e-mail to the GM of my local Cummins Distributor asking about ULSD effects on my 2003 C Series, and how I should mitigate the deleterious effects of ULSD.
Guess what they wrote back?
Not a thing.
Guess the lawyers are involved.

I plan to run PowerService Diesel Kleen, based on Frank's recommendation via a friend who is a Cummins distributor. The diesel kleen will compensate for the reduced lubricity of ULSD fuel, raise cetane, and keep the engines running well. (I hope)

I don't abuse my engines..they live a pleasant 2100 RPM cruise existence, so I am confident of many years of service.

regards
Skip

Petep, I also looked very hard at the dinghy's. What did you and your better 1/2 come up with? Iam in the market too. JC

JC3 - I sent you a PM to try to answer your question on this so as to not "high-jack" this thread.

Skip, while at the boat show I spoke with the Cat people at their booth and their response to me was that "nothing is needed additionally for the momemt anyway".

They did however agree that it was a good topic to bring up at the upcoming Cat seminar.

I was told that the sulpher is actually a friction threat not a lubricant.
I'll have to speak with a chemist.

Hey Dave:
I know we spoke, but I forgot....when are the dates for the CAT Seminar again.. :smt017 ..and where....if I got the time, I wanna try and make it....

Hi Dom

Holtsville Long Island, march 7 and 8

hope to see you there, you must call and ask for Vallerie at ho penn, 8:30 - 3:30 30 bucks, but you get breakfast and lunch and 10% off all parts and supplies this is the only time cat discounts, you can even by parts or components for later use and pay cat to install them. plus you will learn alot.

Dave

The lubricity problem from ULSD is not from the absence of sulfur, but from the process that removes the sulfur. That process also scrubs some of the lubricity from the fuel.

Fuel is the lubricant for the fuel pump and injectors..........I'm not taking chances with any of my engines whether they are Caterpillars Cummins, Yanmars Kubota or others.......I'm using a fuel supplement that is labeled to replace lubricity in ULSD fuels.

Gotcha Frank and thanks.

JC3 call your area Cat dealer and ask, if not let them know H.O.Penn in Ny and Ct do. They just might consider offering one.

Dave:

Back on topic here with regard to the tatle tale gauge. You said that it can be mounted on the dash....How's that....

PS...I'm going to check with my office for the 7th and 8th....I've got some things going on then....I'm also going to check with my local CAT dealer to see if they have a seminar going.....

Dave:
I spoke with my local CAT dealer in NJ and he said that they are putting together a seminar for sometime in either late March or early April in the Cape May NJ area. So, I thinkg I'll wait for that one...

Hey Dominic,
Please keep me in the loop for the Cape May seminar from Cat (if it comes off). It may be worth the drive to attend.

Dom, seems to be. I have a question into seller to see if this actually the same product as it was presented as just new. this might be its debut!

Maybe we could get a group discount if more CSR members are interested? I would certainly want 2 !

Which Diesel Kleen do you use....the one in the white container or the Grey container....the local Wal-Mart has both.....one is specifically for winter storage, but says you can use it all year. The other is for warm weather only....no anti gell "stuff"

I'm not skip.....will I do...........?

The stuff in the white jug is for cold weather. It is an anti-gel and will improve cetane up to 2 numbers. The stuff in the gray bottle does have an antigel, but it has a better additive package for cetane enhancement and detergency. Cetane improves by up to 4 numbers and injectors stay cleaner with the gray bottle stuff.

Since you haul out in the winter when it gets to freezing temps, antigel isn't much of a consideration for you, I'd use the Diesel Kleen + Cetane Boost in the gray jug if I were you........and I do, BTW.
