First, Newb here! and great site!

now to my questions and concerns....

i purchased a 1977 searay 19' boat dirt cheap a month ago. Guy said it was "lake ready" not the case...but didnt care due to price....now my problems....

1. Points for the boat? where to get them? is a 302 merc 188HP motor. Went to the searay dealer and they were clueless, and went to pepboys looking for points with no luck...mine are corroded badly, and playing mayhem and causing the boat to be unable to go to the lake.

2. where to find the rubber 4" to 3" boot that attaches to the water manafold elboe....again searay was no help what so ever since they couldnt find any info on the motor. (although there are several members with the 188hp motor)

3. where to find a distributer cap/rotor? went to pep boys and couldnt find a replacement, and searay dealer obviously was no help.

I would assume the knowledge on this forum could get me on my way to enjoying this boat. i figure there was a website out there where i could order said parts, but no such luck finding one.

thanks in advance,
Jason

Too bad you're not getting much help, there.

Look in the phone book for a Mecruiser shop (doesn't have to be a Sea Ray dealer). Sierra makes a lot of aftermarket parts, too.

You might get lucky and find the stuff you're looking for at an online shop like perfprotech.com. Make a note of your engine's serial number as that will help.

I would think a 1975 through 1979 Ford truck from a F100 Ranger to a F150 or even a F250 as long as it has a 5.0 liter 302 in it should fit your needs for a distributor cap and button, points and condensor and even new plug wires, remove the distributor cap and button be sure to mark your wires so you don't get the wires crossed and remove the points and condensor and visit your local Napa, AutoZone or Advance Auto parts a knowledgeable parts guy should be able to fix you up with all your needs. Reinstall all your new ignition parts gap the points from .017" to about .021", I would also check the timing and make sure it's about 6º to about 8º every engine is different you just have to play with it. Hope this might help you

Ditto on NAPA, they have marine/Mercruiser parts - or at least can order them.

West Marine also has them in packages.

That Sea Ray dealer is useless to you on something like this. That engine/drive combo was one of the most popular packages that MerCruiser sold during the '70s and I had one. If I recall, the distributor is a Prestolite that was a mechanical advance model....automotive stuff won't cross over. You can get the Mod. number off of it and do an internet search to find the points, cap, rotor, etc. As far as the exhaust hoses...this is MerCruiser stuff and as Lazy Daze says...go to the phone book or web for a MerCruiser dealer near you or order on line. I suggest that you look online also for a manual on your motor and drive....you are going to need it.

Jason, you didn't say where you are but unless you are near a larger city near a big river or on the coast you are going to be using the web for a lot of this stuff.

Good Luck,

John, sprink56
