Hi everyone.

I have a 1998 Merc. 2 stroke. I have noticed some things this season that I have questions about:

1- Had carb rebuilt/cleaned last summer. worked great. I winterized/fogged and stored in my garage for winter.
Summerized on a stand/water tank in the spring and no issues.
Ran great for one weekend. Following weekend wouldn't start with normal procedure (few pumps of the primer/choke and pull) Since then I've had to pull the cowling off, prime it by hand (pushing the primer button) and holding a little throttle open with me finger) once it starts its fine until its cold again.

2-The lower unit lube was changed when winterized, and double checked in spring. I find the shaft above the lower unit, near the exhaust outlet get really hot. Almost too hot to touch. The impeller seems to be pumping water fine, the tell tale comes on and off with the t-stat opening and closing, like it has always done.

3-I'm pretty sure I cut a rope last weekend, but it didn't wrap around the prop at all. When I got back and tilted the engine up I noticed a lot of grease/lube in the prop hub. Did I possibly damage a seal? This could also be related to the hot shaft.

4-Has anyone done the 9.9-15HP Conversion? From what I hear its just a carb and exhaust tube.

Any ideas would be helpful! Thanks!

I have the same motor but a 15hp. I chased similar issues you've had with starting. Definitely make sure you are not running fuel with ethanol. That's step 1. They are very sensitive to anything that's not pure fuel/oil. If your carb has been properly serviced, etc. and fuel is not the issue, I'd check the fuel line/tank. I've had issues with fuel pickups both in my original quicksilver tank and then with an aftermarket tank I bought. I finally went back to a new quicksilver tank and that solved that issue.

Not sure about the exhaust outlet. Seems like mine behaves as your's does so not sure there is anything wrong there. I've never noticed any grease on my prop shaft or in/around that area. Probably worth pulling it apart and re-assembling just to make sure you are ok. It's a 15min job so worth the time for peace of mind.

Hope that helps

I had a problem starting my 9.9. It turned out the ethanol gas eat up the inside of the gas line from my gas tank to the motor which caused the carb to keep getting clogged. Otherwise it was a great motor.. I just sold it to get something lighter.
