Question for Boaters around Barnegat Bay

Rod, I was thinking the same thing, esp when someone mentioned Treasure Island and stuff on the Manasquan River. Nice destinations but probably too far for a day trip.

You always inspire me to change the boring font!

What Rick is trying to say is that us Northern Barnegat Bayers are a bunch of snobs....and that we don't want no banjo Playin' Southern Barnegat Bay boaters up in our parts....ya' here?.....

I don't agree that any of those destinations are too far for a day trip.....well maybe for Ron...but he's cheap.

Rod, I go to your marina a few times a season just to go for dinner.....you are only about a half ride south from my dock to your dock. The norhtern most BB destinations spoken of above are only about another half hour north of me....

27 miles, 5 (6?) bridges (one of which is blind and trecherous), 3 no-wake zones and 1 painful canal passage - for lunch at Wharfside or Shrimp Box??? :smt119 I'll Neal a ride with you on that one Dom!

Has anyone been to the Lobster Shanty on Toms River recently?

I was there LONG ago (before I got the Sea Ray), and I found the water very VERY shallow around the slips. Although I have been in the area once or twice, I have not ventured over to the slips. The few times I have been all the way down. . .I didn't see boats at the restauraunt. The last two times we went by car, we were unimpressed by the food.

We personally like the Pilot House. You can certainly get their reasonably easily in daytime. . but I would be a bit nervous to go there at night. Miss a stick. . and you are in the goo where ducks go walking when they don't want to get their ankles wet. Because of the night navigation, we tend to go there by car.

Has anyone mentioned Water's Edge in this thread yet? On the mainland side just south of Toms River and Ocean Gate? That is certainly a happening watering hole. The indoor restaurant is a really nice sit down place, completely different from the mayhem that happens outside.

From my own perspective, we tend to draw a line at going north of the Canal. Between the no wake zone north of the Mantaloking bridge and the Canal. . . we are not really inspired to make that trip all that often. Primary reason for us to go that way would be to get to the ocean.

One place we like north of the canal that we do like is the <<marina grill?? can't remember name>>. If you go West coming out of the Canal, instead of East, this place is right next to the Marine Max on Rt 70. They have a really good Sunday brunch.

Barnegat Bay .....Barnegat Bay....Geesh!!!! You're describing the Pt.Pleasant Canal and the Manasquan River....NEITHER of which are the Barnegat Bay....You're supposed to be our fearelss BBSSS leader!!!!!!!

The only bridge that you MIGHT need an opening for is the new Mantalooking bridge...if you are a tall bridge boat with large antennas.

Ron,

It takes me anywhere from 1-1.5hrs from CIM to MM in Brick and that's on one engine ...LOL. So, from LHM to Brielle should be no more than 1-1.5hrs at your normal cruising speed. PP Cannal takes only about 20min.

I can get under all the bridges without even dropping antennae - the problem with bridges is not opening them - it's coming off plane for them. The lengthy trip I was referring to is the trip for our friend coming from Waretown. If he maintains 27mph it'd take him an hour. With the various obstacles, no wakes, slow-downs, and a good current in the canal, I'd double that.

I've made a bunch of trips from Green Cove Marina to Southwinds but we'd eat and stay the weekend. Driving two hours just for some eats? Better be some MIGHTY GOOD eats!

Especially at 1 MPG. Do I need to spend $300 just to get my lunch??

Anyway would love to meet up with you guys once the season starts so will probably make the journey to meet up from time to time

Actually, it would be more like $165 (54miles x 1mpg x $3/gallon) - of course not including the cost of your meal. JD, you have to remember, you'll pay less for gas here in the States. One of the only redeeming qualities about NJ - cheap gas.

If this is how you look at your boating trips, then you need to get sailboat .

We'll help you save some fuel money b/c during mid july to end of august we'll be going south a lot to get away from jelley fish. That's why I had mentioned before that tices could your most frequently visited spot.

Oh I know Ron. I've lived here for 15 years and love the gas prices. But again with the cost of the boat, maintenance, insurance, mooring, food, drink etc etc etc, I dont want to go nuts spending hundreds of $$ each weekend, just to get to a restaurant

I'm looking forward to meeting a great group of people who all have a similar interest and making new friends.

But I'm making notes of all the places you guys are suggesting I check out and REALLY looking forward to dropping my baby in the water.

I don't know.....It must be me....In the summer, come the weekend, I'm looking to go boating. If dinner is the boating plans for the day, then dinner it is. If hanging on the hook is the boating plans, the hanging it is. It's all about a destination......and boating...

Pretty much the same here, Dom. I guess, I can add that spending the night on the hook is also Part of it.

In response to the question about docks at Lobster Shanty on the Toms River, Many of the docks were rebuilt after the 2008 boating season. Water is still somewhat skinny for the 40 footers, but still ok. Don't try to back into a slip. Just bow in and everything will be fine. I do this trip about one a month from May to October.

Does anyone know if you can Dock and Dine at Clarks Landing?

Their kid at the gas dock told me you can tie up at the fuel dock after a certain hour. That was a couple of years ago. I'm sure they have a few vacant slips that are useable now-a-days.
