On my DC panel I have three battery solenoid switches.

1. Port
2. Gen
3. Starboard

When I leave the boat I shut off the Port and Starboard solenoids but when I attempt to de-energize the Gen solenoid it stays energized.

I can't figure out why. Any ideas?

Also, am I doing the right thing to de-energize the battery solenoids while away from the boat and plugged into shore power?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

hello I can't help you with the gen but I leave battery switches on in my 350 so when I get up at night I can turn on my cabin lights if I shut my battery switches off I can't turn my lights on so I leave them on and leave battery charger breaker on and ac on and cabin lights breaker and refrigerators all others I turn off the breakers your gen switch should shut off when you push the bottom if not iam at a loss I hope some one else will chime iN one thought it might be overridden in the engine compartment I know I can over ride mine from in engine room when working on gen

First let me explain how the solenoid works they are latching that means that once they are on or off they no longer draw current. They do this be switching the polarity on the two smaller terminals on the face of the solenoid. Done by a small polarized magnet inside the unit. polarity one way it attracts the magnet and props the contact inside closed. polarity the other way and it repels the magnet allowing the contact to open. first check your dc panel in the engine room and see if it works on and off for your generator if it works then i would say it is the switch in your cabin panel. if it also doesn't work then I would check the fuses on the solenoid itself. they are located in the engine room dc breaker panel where the switches are. if still no results check all the switch connections and after that it may be a bad solenoid absolutely a bear to change. hope this helped.

Time To Relax,

Thank you so much. I'll follow the process you suggested and see I can can solve the problem.

Clearly, I should have paid more attention in science class. :)

When I leave the boat I turn off all Dc power port starboard and generator. even by doing so some things remain on like bilge pumps, systems monitor, radio memory and a few others. only way to turn those off is at breaker panel in engine room. On the 110 side I leave on refrigerator, Dc charger, Air condition and in the winter engine room heater.
