Since i'm still waiting on the water in the yard to be turned on I figured I'd catch up on some little odds and ends. First, whats the best homemade concoction that will remove the green oxidation on the strainers in the bilge.

Second: We spilled about a quart of olive oil on the tan canvas runner in the salon last summer. i quickly rolled it up to prevent it form getting to the carpet. We were away on a trip so we balled it up and washed it when we got home. However you can still see the oil stain. Any home remedies for removing the oil stain?

Is calling Golia Sails from Home and ordering a new one a Home Remedy?o_O I bet that once it has been washed, the stain is set for good. I would probably try to soak it in a tub of OXI Clean for a few hours and then wash again. Good Luck!

Soaking the oil stain with Lestoil prior to washing would normally work. Not sure if it will work once you already washed it but you can try soaking in the Lestoil and running it through your machine again.

Maybe some "Goop" hand cleaner. It says it is good on fabrics and I have used it on home fabrics. My concern is that even if all this work this one area would be cleaner than the rest and present the same problem just in reverse. I am guessing it is Sunbrella so you can probably also try their bleaching method to give it a good cleaning.

Depending on how big the runner is it might just be easier to get a new one cut and bound.

The green coloring is a patina or 'verdigris' (just like the Statue of Liberty). It actually is helping to preserve the bronze underneath. This happens due to the copper in bronze. You can remove it for aesthetics, but it is not hurting anything to leave it there. I've never worried about cleaning it, so I can't say from personal experience - but from what I've read over the years... apparently ketchup does a good job! Supposedly it's the oxalic acid that does the work, which makes me wonder if something like Slimy Grimy would work... better or worse, I don't know. I would imagine that a paste is important so it clings to the surface for a bit.

It won’t come out. Seems to bind to the polyester. Maybe try soaking the entire thing with more oil so the stain is even everywhere and not in one spot?

Dean, we just received a new runner from Gioia for the same reasons we could not get food oil stains out. I’m not crazy about the fitment for the $$. also I just did my strainers I hit them with a wire brush on the cordless then a mixture of baking soda /lime juice use a wire toothbrush and let it sit for 1/2 or more then rinse they look much better but I can’t seem to get the knooks and crannies. I was thinking of clear coating them after .... hope this helps

You can buy oxalic acid From Amazon or pick up Barkeepers Friend locally. It’s pretty cheap in places like Target & Home Depot.

Thanks for the suggestions thus far. We don't like the feel of the canvas under foot but appreciate having it down to protect the carpet. Wouldn't invest in another for that reason. Would much prefer a runner in its place. Will try some of the above suggestions to see how it comes out. Will give the baking soda and lime juice a try Joe.

My Admiral would suggest Dawn dish-washing soap. She uses it for all oily stains. She rubs it straight on the stain. Soaks it for a few hours and throws it back in the washer. Seems to work well. With the way I eat she gets to test it often.
