QSM-11/Sherwood 1814X Waterpump zincs?

In an effort to fix an oil leak on one of my engines, I had to pull the water pump off the engine. I'm also putting an engine heater under the oil pan and this had to come off to get access. I went ahead and stuck a new cam in it, new impeller, and painted it up pretty. Anyway, I notice there are 2 plugs on the elbows above and below the water pump. Here's a shot of one:

The manual doesn't show these as a zinc location but they sure looks like them. Anyone have zincs at this location on their pumps? I've never put zincs here... these are new pumps as of last summer as well. Those elbows are bronze and are held in with stainless bolts/washers. Seems like there could be an issue... Comments? Suggestions?

Crack the new paint and find out. My guess is it is a drain plug.

Since there are 2, one on the inlet the other on the outlet, I think they are probably drain plugs for the guys who live where they must drain and winterize the sea water system.

Now, if you had Caterpillars there wouldn't be a mystery.........Cat marks the zinc plugs for us.

sure looks like a candidate for a zinc plug location to me.

I posted the question over at boatdiesel and someone said those plugs were to measure suction and boost on each side... If that is true or not I don't know but that's a great idea. If there were electronic pressure sensors on each side of the pump, you would know when the effeciency was going down from vane lose, blockage, etc...

Cat doesn't use Sherwood pumps?

The locations for the zincs is pointed out in the manual, as I said before, and this was not on the diagram... that's why I asked smarty pants.

Those "plugs" are there strictly for testing pump operation.. They ARE NOT for zincs...

Original Caterpillar zincs are painted red so you can find them the first time around.......once you change them, you are on your own.
