Attention all QSM-11 Owners

I came across this:

...cummins has a service campaign to replace the gear cooler mount and clamps on qsm 11's..this was mandated by the U.S. Coast Guard back in September of 2010.....it is supposed to be no charge to replace the angle bracket on the engine and replace the single clamp arrangement with 2 clamps....the campaign # is C1029,,and work must be done by authorized cummins dealers...

I guess I am not the only one that had this bracket break and almost sink the boat.

I don't know if you already heard about this, I didn't. But I called Cummins, they verified it and will install two new brackets.

Has anyone had this bracket changed yet? Any pics of the new bracket?

Yep had this done earlier this year at no cost to me by my cummins dealer. No pics sorry. It looks just like the old one, except with two clamps.

Well they came and changed my clamps. The ones they put on mine are a lot different. It has a right angle bracket that bolts to the engine, that is very similar to the original. But then the gear cooler mounts to that with two mounts. It is a big rubber bushing on the bottom half, then a strap around the top half. The bolts that hold the top half goes straight through the bushing and the right angle bracket.

Now I need to get down there with some spray paint and something to try and clean that label up.

While checking that out I found this on the starboard exhaust in the lazarette:

What is the best source for these T-bolt clamps? I will probably change all of them.

They are installing new ones on my engines next week.... The rubber thing makes me wonder if it solves the dang vibration problem with regards to the shaft seal water pickup leak I have fought for 54 years.

Oh yeah... I have a half dozen of those clamps as spares as I always gall them up when I try and reuse them. I have to pull the port exhaust tube to get to the port impeller hence the spare clamps.

I remember you telling me that, so I always lube it up good when I take my tube out.

There ya go again...

I've lubricated mine as well but it just seems a lot bigger once it gets in there and gets stuck... So I just cut it off and put a new one on.

Do you know which size it is? Mine seems to be just over 8 1/2 inches. Do these prices look ok?

7-50/64" ~ 8-4/64" STBC800 $7.15

8-18/64" ~ 8-36/64" STBC850 $7.15

8-42/64" ~ 8-60/64" STBC888 $9.70

Now looking closer, I can get them with stainless bolts or carbon steel bolts. I originally thought stainless, but the carbon steel is quite a bit stronger.

thoughts?

OK... I wanted to report back on this bracket update. If you have QSM-11's and have the old bracket, get this new one done ASAP. It fixed the raw water leakage problem I had and have been chasing for 54 years. Apparently, it has been leaking around the o-ring in the joint for the transmission cooler and engine coolant heat exchanger. I guess the single strap caused a lot of flexing in the joint and made it leak... and ole' Greg-ster here said he had this leak as well and with the updated bracket, it went away as well.

This should have been done 8 years ago.
