For those of you who have removed your after coolers:
I'm about to attempt it and would appreciate some advice. It looks to me as though I need to loosen the fuel/oil cooler enough, or maybe even remove it entirely, to gain access to the bolts holding the after cooler from below the mounting plate. Am I correct? Can the fuel/oil cooler assembly be removed and just laid down, or do I need to wire it up somehow?

Register your serial number(s) on cummins quickserve and you have access to the manuals. All the steps and torque settings are listed!

You need to remove one fuel line and completely unbolt the fuel cooler, I leave mine hanging as low as possible with wire ties, the shortest link is the fuel return from engine to cooler - you have a whopping 1" of slack! Its all spelled out really well in the manuals.

Are you cleaning yourself or bringing to a shop? Either way are they dong the same that Tony Athens (sbmar.com) would recommend?

I always have a devil of a time with the quick serve website...I likely need a course in how to use it.

Maybe it would work better with my laptop instead of my iPad....

Bennett - you are not alone..... It's a miserable experience trying to find something and navigate through. It's slow, drawings and graphics are poor, many items do not have the technical data or even pictures. My mechanic (who is a Cat guy BTW) has difficulty also with it and ends up calling Cummins.

The more I look at the port side, the less I like my odds. I just don't fold up near as well as I used to. I'm going to talk to a guy this weekend, and if he follows Tony's methods pretty closely, I'll just let him do it. I hate to do it, but I'm just at the point in life that my ability to pay someone to do the messy stuff outweighs my desire to get contorted and messy.

I agree, not the easiest to use but there is a lot of good info there. I would definitely avoid using small devices to navigate it, the technology on the site is old and doesn't react well to tablets and smaller.

see green circles on attached file for reference

Add your serial number, click on "Service" Tab on the red bar at the top, then select the "Manuals" tab.

Towards the bottom select the "QSC8.3 and QSL9 Marine Operations and Maintenance Manual"

in that doc go to "Section 8 Maintenance Procedures at 3 years", the sub section Aftercooler Assembly" is what your after.

I printed relevant sections to a PDF that I can then use on my phone for reference if I need it. The first year I printed the instructions.

Takes me about 1.5 hours to get each side off, and about the same back on. The cleaning/reassembly takes another 2-3 hours each.
