Hi all,

Just entered a verbal agreement on a 2002 260DA, pending a mechanical inspection on the engine. I've been around boats my whole life, outboards years ago and most recently wakeboard boats. Havn't been much of an engine guy up until now, but really hoping to learn some basics and be to do some of the simple maintenance things myself. I've found some good videos on how to change oil and tune up the Merc 5.7 which i think will be a great start. Curious if anyone has any resources for general engine maintenance? Or tips for a newbie? Been around for long enough to know things will eventually go wrong with an engine so the more i know the better, especially since we'll be further away from the dock than we are used to most of the time in this rig. When things go wrong, what are common issues to look for? Where to look first? Anyways, just a newb looking for any and all info, tips etc when it comes to the engine.

Cheers

Look to get a full survey and sea trial on top of the "mechanical inspection". Without seat you will never know if the engine, and drive and props will perform to spec. The surveyor will go through a comprehensive inspection and report on all the non mechanical systems. It will cost you some money but may find some expensive repairs. Also when you look to insure it may be required anyway.
