Actually had planned to install right below the Garmin, but one of the service guys at the dealership recommended putting it where it is now so that I wouldn't be banging my knees on the thing everytime I get in or out of the seat.

and easy wiring.. right through the inside of the fiberglass to the under console.. perfect! thats where im putting mine now when i get one!

Digital Selective Calling

Click the folling link to learn all about DSC. But its distress features are important, but it also allows bridge to bridge calling over CH70 without the call being overheard by the entire boating community.

Very awsome link... Thanks!

Upon further investigation it would appear that my set up is compatable also! Now I have something else to play with when I get home from Iraq!! :smt038

Trouble is, in friggin Kansas its hard enough finding some one with a vhf, sigh,,,looks like Im just going to have to drag the boat to the gulf so I can play with this feature!

After checking the manual for my radio, it listed the wiring hookups for 18 different GPS manufacturers, Id say that it is safe to assume DSC radios and Gps's are compatable accross the board.

Thanks for learning me something new!!!

Thats what I gather,,, if you and I are on the same lake I can punch in your number and hit you up on channel 70 and your radio (if you accept) will automaticlly go to what ever channel I ask it to. It will also give you my coords.

In this application it seems like it would be benificial if I knew you were going to be out on the water but didnt know what channel you were on.... however most groups of friends all run on one channel and we all know what channel to reach each other on....

But after reading the manual all night long (I just got off work, its 730am here) All the other goodies that come with the DSC program will make it worth hooking up the 2 wires that are already hanging out of my radio and gps!!!!

Great info, just to clarify I've got my antenna setup like avguy with it mounted on the side of the Hull. Personally I've got both the fixed high output system with DSC and a hand held as a backup  As to the GPS/Radio DSC setup/function I think you will find most low to mid grade system are going to be limited. Most GPS will only send data to the radio not receive it and display location of of the other boat.

The GPS can recieve info from the VHF/DSC, depends on the GPS, What I recommend is looking up your GPS, or the one youplan to purchase, and you can download the manual, it will tell you all that that GPS is capable of.

Many GPS will recieve the distress signal from the DSC and guide you to it....

There is an Excellent link several posts up that explains all there is to know about DSC

Just want to make sure what class radio you have - IMHO most low to mid class radio that are being sold for rec boats are class D that have limited DSC functions. When hooked to your GPS it is mainly setup for the rescue 21 system that is just coming on line at this time.

Don't get me wrong I think DSC is a great idea, just has a long way to go before it will work as promised.

Mine is a class D radio. If I read it correctly the class D will still be able to recieve DSC transmissions whlie I am recieveing ionfo from another channel, which is different from the step above it in that the better one can also recieve a DSC transmission while It is TRANSMITTING also.
Either way, Like you said, I dont think the system is operating quite like advertised yet... Ill sure never get a chance to play with it in Kansas,,,,, but Ill have it hooked up any way!!!
