Talking in another thread, it came up that prop shops can rework props diameter and bores......I have a set of 21 X 23 X 1.5....... I need 22 X 22 X 1.75. I'm pretty sure a shop can rebore to 1.75 and Know they can re-pitch from 23 to 22....the real question is can they add an inch....(to the props .... to the props).... ....I'll call a local shop and ask them but I was curious if anyone here had any experience doing this and is it worth the effort.....

The way I figure it, even if it cost the same as a new/used set of props, I don't have to worry about having a second set hanging around doing nothing......

Dominic,
Maybe I am off the mark here but if you are using them as spares, I would think that as long as they are close to "spec" and you are just using them to get home, you would be fine. Just my $.02.

Guess you are not taking her for a run up-river today......as I type this its 29 degrees...Where the hell did spring go ???

Happy Easter and good morning men!

I agree dom, those props new are 1100 each in bronze and up to 1600 in nibral, however my last prop job was 900 not including labor from marina. Walk them in yourself and i'm sure it will be a lot less.

Were going to hit 58 here today in HH, its sunny so its ok.

Just looked out the porthole and saw a boat from LBI, NJ named "Carolanne" a 45 DB , you guys know her?

Lots of boats here coming north I guess.

Personal preference, but I prefer that my spares be identical to the wheels I run . If I have to change props while on a trip, I'd rather just swap out once and forget about it......the worst thing is being on a trip and not having props to put on at all.

I have had spares on every boat I've owned....even my laguna outboard. I have NEVER had to use them, so having them has been pleasing the prop gods.....so far.....

I just feel more comfortable having spares on board.....

If the shop can't rework the ones I have, then I'll look for a set of used ones and sell the ones I have.....any 380DA owners want to buy a nice set of shinny clean nibrals.....

I agree Dom, If I'm pulling the boat to mount wheels I want to do it once, not when I get back from my cruise also to put on the "right-size". I also have Props for sale - and boy are they shiny! See the Classified section for the details.

Pat....thanks for the input.....If I go with that line of thought, then they would be "just" spares to get home on and not a second set of props.....the drawbacks with that is, I would have to rehaul and put the main props back and if I do serious damage to the main set, and they can't be repaired, then I'm back in the same situation I am now....looking for props that I can just leave on.....

Just got off the phone with Atlantis Prop in NJ....he can re-pitch and re-bore but he can't add diameter......so....I guess it's official....I have a set of Four Blade Nibral 21 X 23 X 1.5 for sale.....he said that these go for about $1400 each new, and even with new you have to work them.....so add another $250 or so to each prop.....

Let Frank make a comment soon.
I see your desire, but there are a few things I'd look at also.
Look at how much weight you are adding to the boat every month. How much comes aboard and stays. In time, probably by the time you would need to use the props the boat might have gained 1000 lbs. 100 RPM is negligible in the big picture. You could run the 21x23's until your next haul out then swap back if you felt the performance was compromised. With a slightly lower pitch the engines will make full rated speed, the boat just might be a tic slower. I can't say if it will be perceptible or not.
Coming from sailing I tend to hang on to stuff. It's hard to sell and find used good props in the correct size when you need them.

I came around to this way of thinking a few years ago. Had a dinged prop three days prior to vacation and was told a new set of props would be a 4-6 week wait. Nibral props are expensive and dealers and manufacturers to not stock them because the inventory costs are too high. I bit the bullet and bought a new set for my boat. Had them prop scanned and take them on vacation. If I damage a wheel, I'll just swap them out, have the old ones repaired and scanned and keep them in the box for the next time. When your season is just 6 months, you don't want to run the risk of waiting 5 weeks for a new set to be made.

Dave:

I spoke with the prop shop about using bronze as compared to Nibrals. According to him, Diesel powered boats need the benefits of the Nibral's stiffness. Less flex with all the torque.

I would concur that your spares be identical. I would also concur that just having a set of spares is, IMO, a must have if you cruise any distances from home. Replacing props while cruising is one of those "when it happens" and not one of the "if it happens" things. I have had to replace mine several times while out on various trips and having the spares makes prop damage a 1 hour hour haul out and "non-event" until you return home and get the bill for fixing the damaged ones. Also carry extra cotter pins and keys.

OK.....I Just bought a pair of brandy spankin' Shinny NEW props...... ......They will be computer Prop Scanned and then Stored on board......"Just In Case".....If wasn't so darn expensive (over $600) I would put them on now and use the existing props as spares......Next season, these WILL be my primaries.....

Anyway....I've always just kind of stored my spares under the salon. This time around, I was thinking of getting a little more creative and possibly storing them in the engine compartment on one the "thingies" in the picture below........anyone else use one of these....and anyone have an idea how/where to store them in the engine compartment.....specifically on a 410DA???

thanks,

Those spare prop holders are nice, I use them for spares also. Sometimes they are hard to find, check with Flounder Pounder as he had some last time I was there to visit. I also got one for an other boat on E-Bay from M.Max. In the 410 EC they mounted in the engine room port side aft, in the 460 they mount down in the cabin under the carpet in the forward bilge, Maybe the 410DA has a "designated place" where the factory put them, call customer service as they may know.

Dom-

There's a good amount of space aft of the generator on my 410, and they would be out of the way of general maintenance there. The hull is level and really beefed up in that area as well due to the mounting of the genny, so you don't have to worry about mounting screws penetrating the hull. It would require a bit of maneuvering to get to them, but with a little luck, it won't be a frequent requirement. Other than that, I can't imagine another out of the way place in the 410DA engine room.

Pete:

That picture is right off of flounder pounder's website. I plan to order from them.....IF.....I can get my 50 year old bones into the space that tc410 is talking about...

thanks,
