I bought my first boat last summer, a used 2007 195 Sport w/ the 4.3MPI (220hp). The boat came with a 19 pitch Vengeance prop on it from the original owner. The boat comes out of the hole with ease at 1/2 throttle, even pulling a tuber. It tops out at about 43-44mph hitting the rev-limiter at 4800 rpm (about 1/2-2/3 throttle). Does anyone else with this set up have the same problem or what prop are you running? Should this be happening with a 19p prop or is it possible that the original owner had the prop reshaped?

Props can be changed to tailer you needs or desires, for top end speed or to pop skiers out of the water quickly. I have a 200 CC with a 4.3L and run the factor spec. prop. I have no issues with getting skiers up and have good top end speed as well.

If you've got it trimmed correctly and have throttle to spare, then it seems as though the previous owner has a lower pitch prop on there. Possibly for water sports, or maybe had a heavy load on the boat most of the time.

If you PM me tomorrow, late afternoon, I'll check the prop charts when I get to work. It could be either a 21" or 23" that would have been standard.

Sounds like your RPM gauge is off a bit - the rev limiter shouldn't kick in until a bit higher (maybe about 4950 or 5000, I don't fully remember).

If you're interested in information about what prop to run for various activities, use the search feature on this site - there is quite a lot of info here.

I had a similiar issue with my boat and my issue turned out to be the hub inside my prop had a huge crack. You might want to check that.

Thanks for the info guys, i'll have to play around with it come spring. Only 3 more months!!! I hate winter in St. Louis.

Move up to the same prop but a 21 pitch. I have a 185 with the 4.3 and mine did the same thing with the 19 pitch. It will give you about 5 mph top end. You will lose a little out the hole but I can still pull up a wakeboarder with a boat load of people. The 21 pitch wont let your engine rev limit out anymore.

I was looking through my books last night for a customer and it reminded me of you. 21" would have been standard - and you should see speeds somewhere between 49 - 53.

Thank you again for all the info!! Time to buy a new prop come spring! At least this way i'll have a spare also.

Sea Ray's prop chart says you should be running a 13.75x21 SS Vengeance prop with a 1.62:1 Alpha ouutdrive.

** I read the chart wrong. The above info I posted is for a 185 Sport. For a 195 Sport it should be a 14x19 SS Vengeance from the factory. Sorry for the misinformation!!**

Dennis,

This is Orie, how are you? You got me all confused buddy, as you know I have the 210 Select with the 5.0 Mercruiser V-8 and it came stock from the factory with a 19" prop. How could a 4.3 V-6 come with a 21 incher? BTW, I'm topping out at about 4700 RPM, should I be getting higher RPMs with this setup?

Thanks

Orie

Hi Orie! Merc will change the gear ratio inside the drive to account for different engine and prop configurations. Your RPM sounds spot on - no worries! :smt001
