Prop engagement... sometimes/sometimes not!

I just purchased a 77 Sea Ray SRV 220 Hard Top with a 351 Ford and 235 OMC outdrive, a classic style that I've loved since I was a kid... Drive engages, Reverse sometimes engages, and then Drive and Reverse will not engage. Any thoughts as to what the problem may be? Also, where can I locate parts for this boat?

We don't have enough info. What do you have for and engine/outdrive package?

Not real familiar with the OMC set-ups, so I'm going to mention something based on a Merc. Look for where the shift cable attaches at the engine. With Merc's, there's a barrel adjuster. Spin the prop by hand while in neutral. There should be no clicking sound. Adjust barrel adjuster until there is no clicking while turning the prop in either direction. Again, this is for a Merc, so I could be wrong.

Stretched out cables? Worn gears?

The previous owner (second owner) said when he purchased the boat it would not shift in gear at all. Has an electronic controlled shift mechanism? Anyone know about this?

I will check for the barrel adjuster and make adjustments as well.

Is that the one with that goofy and problematic electric shift?

There was a guy here who had one. I forgot what he did. Maybe you can find the posts using search? That system is before my time.

Best regards,
Frank
