Hi.this Is My First Time On This.i Have A 1982 Sea Ray Aberjack 255v. I've Been Going Nut's With The Power Steering.i Have None At This Time.i Can't Seem To Find The Rack That Is Mounted At The Rear Of The Engine. Ive Had This Problem For Several Years, even Dealers Can't Help.this Boat Is In Fine Condition And Alot Of Work Has Been Done To It. Can Anyone Help Out?

hello...more info...what engine ? inboard ? usually the first place to start is check to see if the steering cable is stiffened up....but you need to locate where it comes into the transom assembly behind the engine assuming your boat is set up this way....unpin it from the assembly and see if wheel turns easily ( it should)....if not cable is bad = replace cable.

How Long Does It Take To Type In All Capital Letters?

what ? I don't see all caps ? but to answer your question if you use the caps lock it is really quick.

Really? You dont see the first letter of every word capitalized in mine or the previous post?

Hmmm...

All caps is not time consuming, but capitalizing the first letter of every word takes some doing.

You're out of delta house now!

What's Wrong With Your Steering Rack? How Do You Know That There Is A Problem? What Type Of Problem Is It. Can The Rack Be Rebuilt? Did You Just Try To Get The Rack Or Did You Try To Rebuild It? Is It Superseded By A New Part Number?

Best Regards
Frank

I guess that will teach him to ask a question. He violated board rules. No good answers for him!

ok, ok, i turned the cap loc off.i see better withiit on. steering rack.punp is new,and working, cable is good i'v checked that out. i believe that the rack is shot.even the sea ray
dealers don't seem to know what rack i can use.they like to selll boats.i guess what i need is a replacement unit, that's what i'm looking for.

I find it hard to believe that any SR dealer would tell you that. I'll bet they'd have an easier time getting you to buy a new boat if they helped you fix up your old one, eh? Oh well... silly dealers.

Tony, first off... Welcome to CSR. They guys around here are good bunch, even if they do bust people's chops every once in a while. Just think of it as hanging out with the 3 (or 3000) Stooges without all of that head slapping and eye poking.

Just straighten up that antenna, pull in your bumpers, and for Pete's sake, put your blasted boat information in your signature. (actually... Wesley's sake, but Pete was there first). You'll be fine.

I offer 3 pieces of advice.

1) Call Sea Ray with your hull ID number and ask them what the part number is for the rack. They should be able to answer any other questions that you might want to ask.

2.) Take a few pictures of your engine compartment and post them here. Someone will tell you where it is based on that.

3.) Ask 10 guys at the marina where it is. Two of them will be correct - your job to pick which 2...

Good luck and wELCOME tO cLUB sEA rAY, (about 3 seconds to do it that way, Bill)

I'm not an expert on those steering cable systems, but I think the cable and rack are one piece. You have to replace them as an assembly. Remove the old one starting from the rack at the helm and pull the cable forward. Measure the cable and order one that is the same length. Push the cable from the helm back to the stern.

There's not much more to it.

Best regards,
Frank

hi there,i did take pictures,i did call sea ray at one time, and your right about the 10 guys..all pump systems on the boat are working, cables are good,i think it's the whole rack.
if you could thinlk of it as driving a old truck.try to back into a slip! what i was looking for is information on were i might find a rack that old or a replacment for it. i thank you for the reply.
