Port side muffler

can the current muffler be repaired?....i know that MasterFab (Dale) rearranged the inlets to his mufflers when he was doing his restoration project to his 340 which involved some pretty major work on the mufflers......may be worth asking him about repairing the current muffler....

I assumed a muffler on my previous boat was cracked because water was dripping out into the bilge. Spent 1/2 a day trying to get it out and it turns out the drain screw was leaking. Dried it out, put it back in with Marine Tex and all was well.

Point being, are you sure it's cracked?

I had several pin holes in one of mine from a back fire years ago.....
Expensive if your trying to buy a whole new muffler.

Luckily it's simple repair with West System products if you need to go that route.

well it's definitely cracked...in several places....having an issue finding one for a reasonable price and that doesn't take several weeks to get...don't have that kinda time...looks like we'll be taking it out and re fiberglassing it.

How do you figure it cracked?

Not bad! How'd you find someone to do that?

My boat's Centek mufflers still had the part number label on them, so it was easy enough to order a new one. I suppose I could have reconditioned the old one, but it's part of the exhaust system. I don't want to fool around with carbon monoxide issues.

He was recommended by my slip mate....great kid and knows his stuff

Yeah...not worried....the kids great and let's see......$600-900 OR $240......I'll take the chance.

Good for you getting it done at a very reasonable cost.

I know this is an old post, but I just a similar problem. My Stb side muffler developed a 8" crack on the top of the can (it has the two 4" exhaust inlets on the side and one 6" exhaust outlet on the other side - no obstructions on the top of the can). Water and exhaust spewed out while underway causing my bilge pump to run for 4 seconds every 3 minutes. Not good.

I decided to tackle the job myself without removing the muffler from the ER.

First, using my buffer with a sander attachment, the top and sides were sanded to expose the fibreglass under the paint.

Next, 5 layers of fibreglass mat were cut to size (first one larger than each subsequent mat). The entire area was then cleaned with acetone. Mixed a half cup of resin/hardener up and started covering the area with the goop using a small paintbrush, then applied the first layer of fibreglass, then more goop, then more glass, etc.

The job was hard as a rock within 20 minutes, but I waited till the next morning to start the engine. All looked fine, so we took her for a 1hr run at 3600 RPM heading for winter storage. No leaks - dry as a bone!

Not bad for the cost of a $28 fibreglass kit and a dollar store brush!! (oh, and a little sweat equity)

Now all I have left to do is repaint the top black...

I reconditioned both my mufflers 9 years ago using a high temp resin and glass cloth. Came out great and they still look like new.

I think mine are a special order since there are none on the site that have two smaller inlets and one larger outlet all on the sides of the unit which are set at the proper angles to receive the exhaust tubes from the engine and redirect the larger tube to the stern corners (which are about 5' back from the mufflers). Something tells me it would be a boat "buck" to get it replaced!
