While docking today in reverse-- after a while out on the water, i noticed a small amount of white/ Lt grey exhaust smoke coming from my port engine exhaust.....
after docking, and shutting down, i restarted about 30 mins later to test engine...

We noticed 2 small puffs of smoke and smoke smell upon starting port engine and the engine stopped running...We.re-started again, and again would not stay idling after 4 attempts at starting, she again refused to keep running, she starts but stops...i let it sit about another 30 mins and re-started her again, this time she stayed running...i revved up the port engine and she continued to run, i started the starboard engine and it runs fine..the port, starboard, synchronizer gauge showed the port engine a little slower, then after a few revs on the port engine it came up to the starboard engine in synchronization......i shut all down again and
We re-started both engines again and both ran ok.....
the port engine did not stall again, but we did see 2 puffs of smoke upon starting, white, or light grey, the synchronization gauge showed proper engine balance centered...

Bottom line...

When we left boat everything seemed normal with the port engine.... NO longer stalling, and synchronization was OK.

Was this a gas thing maybe??
Does this boat have a gas filter that may have had some crap in it and it cleaned itself out??
Maybe the fuel pump?? is there a fuel sensor?? water in lines????
whatever it is, or was, it DID stall 3 times in a row then it did NOT stall again the next three times

i just want to have it checked before i get stuck somewhere NOT in port.
ANY IDEAS???

Temperature gauge reading was normal, as was the oil pressure and all the the other readings...
plenty of gas in the tanks....

Thanks.....

White "smoke" is steam. No smell.
Blue grey is from oil in the combustion chamber. Smells oily.
Grey to black is excess fuel. Smells like gasoline.

Problem depends on which of the above you noticed. If it was steam I'd look at worn exhaust components. If it's oil, it's internal engine issues. Fuel would be an EFI problem. That the engine wasn't running right tends to reinforce either the first or the last. If it's the exhaust system, you'll want to fix that before you have engine damage.

Best regards,
Frank

Thanks Frank,
What about the fact that it seems to have rectified it self after a few starts and revving port engine? if it were exhaust it would be on going, internal same? If anything i'm hoping fuel glitch that cleaned it self out, when i go back tuesday i'll see what's up after starting....

Stuff doesn't fix itself.

Thanks guys,
will do, and will post back.....

Stuff doesn't fix itself.

That is classic....

While in college I learned of these...

FM - which was fixed magically (or subsitute your own F'word in there)

and

Performing a Goodness - which was fixing something that was not broken...

Bill,

I am right there with you on the issue, same engine too. As Frank suggested I am having my condition evaluated too. (Boat that is, mental condition is left to the professionals..)

GUESS WERE IN THE SAME BOAT....

I will post my outcome and please post yours...:thumbsup:

Had 2 mechanics from Marine Max look at my boat today and they could not find any problems....One mechanic said that i will see LIGHT fuel smoke occasionally from the exhaust, today we saw none, as far as the port engine cutting out after start up, excess gas in the fuel jets, he showed me how to get rid if it.[WHEN STARTING THE PORT ENGINE AND HAVING IT IMMEDIATELY SHUT DOWN, RAISE THE PORT THROTTLE 1/2 WAY AND START THE ENGINE, AS SOON AS IT STARTS BRING THE THROTTLE TO OFF POSITION).....They did raise my port idle a little, but thats it...my problem according to the technican was that excess fuel backed up into the system and finally blew it self out by my revving the port engine throttle sunday....

Today she ran beautifully........
