Does anyone know what the PN is for the raw water pump for a 3116 and best source on East Coast? does it come with gasket?

Thanks....

Caterpillar part numbers are:

Impeller - 7E-0321
O-ring - 8T-2944

Should be available from any Caterpillar dealer in your area. The pumps are manufactured by Sherwood.......who's # for the pump is P1710X. Parts are available from Hypro Marine and Industrial Prod Group....800-471-0460.

If your pumps are leaking sea water, you are ahead of the game to buy complete new pumps from a sherwood distributor rather tean to rebuild with parts from Cat.

My pumps are in good shape and just want to change impellers (every two years). I changed them when I first purchased the boat but didn't record the PN's.

Do you have a maint summary sheet for your engines?
Like xx zincs
T stats 180F
8 gals Cat ELC antifreeze
Fuel filter PN
etc

I think I have most of the info but if you have it already in one sheet somewhere.

Thanks for the help....Ed

Ed....there is a CAT dealer on Route 37 in Toms River. However, I buy my impellers from Searboard marine....Tony Athens. Delivered to your door and lower cost. The CAT/Sherwood impeller has a threaded end to accept a bolt for removal. The Seaboard impeller doesn't. The Seaboard impeller has a rubber 'cap' to protect the pumps cover, the CAT/Sherwood doesn't. When I removed the impellers I used a vise grip and it worked just fine. I bought, an impeller removal tool for the next go-round.

I posted some pics in this thread.

Dom,
Thanks for the refresher....I did this two years ago using the 5/8" NF Bolt extractor and it worked fine (removed the exhaust tube from the SB engine). Just a little worried about putting an impeller in without the thread (to allow easy removal).

Regards....Ed

Frank - you listed CAT part numbers for the impeller but isn't it made by Sherwood? Also, how can you tell when it's time to replace the pump, not just the impeller?

Thanks

WM - what the hell?

looking for replacement impellers and WM has them for almost $100 each. I called and they are no longer doing price match and told me I should order them from the other website(s). So I did....marine pump direct two pack for 118 delivered. In general, their pricing is driving me towards "not a fan" status. its too bad because they have a retail store about 5 miles from our marina. I was already selective for what I went in there for. Now it will be more around emergency needs. What a miss....

Rant over.

What are you ranting about? WM has stores all over the country. Do you think they are free of cost? If you can wait, order on line from on-line suppliers and get the cost benefit. If you can't, got to WM and pay them what it costs them to provide local service.

Rant over.

It is about principle……………not money.

West Marine used to be a good general supply source, but their business model follows that of many marinas and dealerships now…..i.e. charge as much as they can instead of providing a decent value for customers. The overall cost of boating is a real challenge for manufacturers, service providers, parts and supply sources and others now. West Marine is contributing to the decline of the entire industry by shrinking the customer base thru astronomical prices and unreasonable mark-ups.

As I said, it is about principle for me. I have a large West Marine store 1/4 mile from my boat…..I haven't been there in 5 years and have no plans to return. Over time, I have developed other resources including other local stores, online vendors and even my local dealer. Believe it or not, even with the Sea Ray factory, mark-up, many items are cheaper at my dealer because of the huge leverage Sea Ray has with manufacturers.

Sherwood is the OEM sourve for Caterpillar pumps and pump parts. I replaced my pumps with Sherwood and only use Sherwood parts. Cat impellers are just that...implellers. Sherwood sells an impeller kit that contains the o-ring, the impeller and a new key......I just get them from my Sea Ray dealer. The kit is $61, but the real reason I go to the dealer is that they don't stock them. They order them from a large Sherwood distributor (probably DEPCO) in South Fl. so we get impellers that haven't been sitting on a shelf forever and dried out.

Eric,

I do not have the Sherwood number........the marina's part number wouldn't help you. But, you probably need to identify the actual pump you have. There was the original Caterpillar OEM pump, then Sherwood redesigned that pump at least twice and we don't know which ones you have. The redesign had to do with the seals and bearings so it may be that the impellers are interchangeable. The Depco catalog is an excellent resource and I bet you can let your fingers do the walking and figure out what you have and need from their website:
