Play in prop shaft?

While pulling off my prop this weekend, I realized that I have somewhere between 1/4" and a 1/2" of "in and out" play on the prop shaft on my Alpha One. There is no lateral play at all, but I can push it in and pull it out just a wee bit.

Is this normal play?

The drive itself is in primo shape, and I'm a little anal when it comes to maintenance, so yes, the oil is perfect and everything is freshly lubed.

I'm into my second season with the boat, and just noticed the shaft play for the first time this weekend, so I thought I should double check that it wasn't out of the ordinary. I'm still learning about my boat as I go. Anyhow, thanks for the feedback, brother!!! :thumbsup:

Lads,
I would be concerned with 1/2" of prop shaft in and out movement. I recall a problem I had with an Alpha1 drive that was showing wear from the prop spinning against the case due to excessive movement. Under warranty the marina replaced the shaft and shimmed her up. Take a look at several new and old units at a marina and see if they have that much play.
