Pirates ???

Heck, I feel safer on the water than just about anywhere else as far a pirates and thieves. I need a gun walking down the street, not one on the boat. Where do you guys boat that you feel you need a gun? I know around my parts, water and dogs are the best deterrents. None of those little punks know how to swim and they think all dogs are pit bulls.

Kind of like a big moat, Mike? And having two big meat cleavers driven by 300 HP is better than boiling oil.

Best regards,
Frank C

Yeah not around here either. I have never heard of Pirating, unless it's the SeaFair Pirates.

I only take a gun with me if I am going to be out on the hook. I carried one every day for 25 years, and now for the last 3 or 4 years only occasionally, depending on where I'm going and what I'm going to be doing. My kids have seen me carry a gun all their lives. Even though they've never demonstrated even the slightest curiousity about my guns and have been taught how dangerous they can be and to stay away from them I still exercise great caution with my guns.

well the only thing that comes to my mind is how deafening firing a shot in the cabin of a 280 would be.

The Admiral runs a psychology group. She knows how many whack jobs are out there. I only pack a roscoe when we overnight and only because she sleeps better if I do. S/W Model 60 w/ 125 gr. +P hollowpoints.

Yeah - my hearing in my left ear is bad from all the shooting I have done & pistols are the worst - a guy should have hearing protection - but by the time you have learned that, it is usually to late

Believe me, I know about wack jobs. You can't walk 10' without seeing one here. If they can't keep the drool in their mouth, odds are they aren't going to swim out to my boat to hack me to death. They'll pick someone on land. I think a more likely scenario is I hear something, pull out my gun and shoot a hole in the bottom of the boat and sink. But we'll be too busy bleeding from the ears from the shot in the cabin to save ourselves. End up in the paper, everyone will laugh at me.

You need to move you and your GF and 280DA out here. Around here, if they can't hold their drool in their mouth's usually they're charging you $4.50 for a triple tall skinny, no foam mocha, lite on the chocolate while flipping their hair around......and don't have time to think about piracy.

One summer night back in 2003 we were anchored off in the Chickahominy River off of our property there for the night... about 1500 feet from shore. I was awoke about 1:30 am by waves lapping against the hull and went outside to a pitch black night and there was a boat 100 feet from us with it's lights out and circling us. I went up on the bridge and watched them for a few minutes and they just continued to circle us with their lights out. I finally flipped on the spot light and shined it on them and it was a small piece of crap old Trojan cabin cruiser (looked like 70's vintage) and they gunned it and took off.

I've later come to find that boat is kept up river in Lenexa which is an area right out of the movie Deliverance. If you have more than 6 teeth, you are doing good. The "marina" there is so strange I won't go near the place.

I don't think there is much of a difference between breaking and entering into a house or boat for some people... Here was a shiny brand new 50 foot yacht anchored in a river and I bet these guys thought it might be easy pickings. Were these guys pirates? No... they were probably just felons... I'm sure boats get broken into all the time.. Of course they would have had a little surprise waiting for them if they tried to board the boat.

Gary... if they were felons, and looking to steal from a boat, off a boat....that makes them pirates! Pirates don't wear eye patches and yell arrggggh any more! I have seen the bird on the shoulder though. lol.
Sad story, my brother, Coast Guard officer, was a victim of pirates. He had a 50 Sundancer, kept it in Miami. My family has always gone to the islands by private boat, but we generally stay in the Abacos or Grand Bahamas, family islands. Well, he decided to go to Nassau, girl friend pushed him on this. I don't blame her though. After a couple of weeks of islandhopping, he ended up in Nassau, his gf had to fly home. I was supposed to "crew" the boat back to the states with him, but he got overconfident and decided to single hand the boat back on his own. He didn't want to inconvience me, I would have had to fly down etc, etc. Well he knows/knew the waters like the back of his hand, patroled the waters in a 44ft Guard boat. Well, somewhere along the line back to Miami he was hit. CG found his boat pulled back in the saw grass of Andros Island, and no signs of my brother. Long story short, he's been "missing" eversince. This happened back in 2000. Miss him alot, hardest part is not knowing exactly what happened. Mike

Something occured to me after posting this. My brother was in the CG running drug interdiction ops in the islands off Florida. His boat was stationed in Ft Pierce. His crew intercepted a shippment once, and it was one of the areas largest cocaine busts. Tons of coke all over the pier in plastic bags. I wonder now if drug dealers had something to do with his disappearance. The feds and Guard never talked to me about it. Makes me wonder now. Drug runners, pirates what's the difference, same trash.

I'm really sorry to hear about such a tragic loss to your family. Makes one apprehensive about living the boat dream. I guess it pays to travel in groups and be prepared.

That is the ticket, travel in groups. In fact my insurance company specifies (due to boat size) when I go to the islands I have to travel in a "flotilla". A flotilla consists of at least three boats, traveling to the same destination. For safety. I imagine If I were on my brothers boat and "they" tried to overtake, it would have been much harder to accomplish, because as one drives the other can defend. Although if you don't have a "GUN" onboard, I guess you could throw fenders at them.

I would probably employ the use of a flare gun!

Flare gun fires a 12ga shot from a short barrel. It's not accurate unless you have it against the side of the guy's head.

Best regards,
Frank C

It's not accurate unless you're the one being fired at - then, it's accurate enough to make me change my course.
