Not my photos, but here are a few from Georgian Bay this year around the North side of Giant's Tomb Island and in the 30,000 Islands area. Most years this open water does not even freeze over.

This is crazy I can't see how this will be ice free before mid April this year.

Great photos thanks for posting!

That's an incredible amount of ice! Love the caves, never saw anything like that from a frozen body of water before. Damn it's COLD

I like the colors of those, haven't seen that before. For those who have not seen these before, They actually become quite a "tourist attraction". They have to be monitored because when the caves become unstable, people get hurt.
when it warms up they close the area down or go in with heavy equipment and destroy them. Crystal beach is a popular beach for us to go to with the boats for raft ups. You will be able to see Buffalo in the distance at one point in this video. Once the lake is frozen over, they can not be formed any longer, so they are done for this year. -8 on the way in to work this morning...it just doesn't want to quit this year.

You won't see them bringing out heavy equipment to Giants Tomb island. Its quite a distance from mainland. The police do attend while on patrol, but it really isn't monitored. It was broadcast on the news a couple weeks ago, and is now quite the tourist attraction. I was out last Sunday and there were hundreds of snowmobiles out to see the caves. Here is a few pictures I took:

While that is really cool and I'd love to poke around them all those people sure take the magic out of it. Thanks for sharing.
