Hey guys I'm new to the forum and just picked up this 89 Sea Ray. Its in great condition but the previous owner didn't winterize it. He took it to a marina and they said a couple freeze out plugs popped and cracked the exhaust manifolds.
So the guy didn't want to fix it. So I picked it up from the marina and the owner of the marina was nice guy he gave me the exhaust manifolds for free.
So I'm gonna pull it apart and see if the block has any cracks they may have missed.
For what I paid even if I have to replace the motor I'm still working OK.

Thanks guys. I've been posting on forums for years so pics are easy. Hopefully I'll be able to get working on it this weekend.
Its also gonna need to bellows replaced.

I have a question about the bellows. When I first looked I thought the bottom one was missing so I planed on replacing them. Then last night I noticed the exhaust one has a boot on it. Is this a slip type one?
And if so are they good or bad?
I want to replace them anyways being the shift cable one is broke.

That's an exhaust tube, it only attaches on one side like you see in the picture vs the full bellows that attaches on both the transom and drive side. It covers the drive side when the drive is tilted down, but as you trim all of the exhaust is no longer directed down through the prop. This type of bellows was not OEM on this drive, it was made for higher HP engines to prevent the exhaust bellows from causing an exhaust restriction. It is an acceptable replacement on all Mercruiser drives and often used by DIY's since it is easy to install and requires no special tools. Only difference from the full bellows is it is a little louder since all the exhaust is not directed through the prop. I put one on my boat this year when I replaced my bellows - I like it and see no reason to use the full bellows again.

Also noticed your shift cable bellows is torn, probably leaking water into boat - I would replace the shift cable and bellows.

I've been building custom cars for years. Never got into boats till now.
For my custom cars I build all my own engines.
But being this was frozen and the block might be cracked I figured I just replace it.

So the fun begins. I pulled it apart today to find several crake's in the block which I knew would be. I've personal never seen one with popped freeze plugs that didn't crack.
The block is even cracked on the front. Which isn't surprising since we had temps down to 15 below zero this year.
So here's the first pic I got the rear deck out and the back board that the seats connect too.
I'm gonna order a new long block on Tuesday and in the mean time get the old one pulled. So I can get it back in quick.

Nice looking boat. I would replace all of the bellows and boots while you have it apart and throw an impeller in it as well. Then you have years without worrying about that stuff.

OK so I know my 4.3 is 205hp I found a few places listing them up to 275hp. Anybody see a problem with that much HP in this boat?

New long block has been ordered. I found a place that builds them to order. Should be around 230hp.
Its a newer Votec block and he includes an electric fuel pump.
$1465 shipped right to my door. Not a bad deal I thought.
He said I should have it next week.

If I'm not mistaken there are some parts from the older engines that don't fit on the newer Vortec engines. Also, my 2 cents worth on the bellows.... I put that exhaust tube thing on an engine/drive refurbishment I did for a friend and I hated it. It was noisier than a full bellows and blew more bubbles and stuff at idle. I'll never use one again.

Well he told me everything will work. The only difference was the fuel pump. I guess I'll find out when it gets here.
