I was docking my boat, and scratched my boat on the starboard side (back) pretty badly on the metal structure. I am posting a pic of it here. Does anyone know how much its going to cost me to fix it ?

Thanks

Saw another boat in our marina with worse damange. We're luck to have agreat fiberglass near our area. Took him 3 visits I think to make all repairs - I think it was just over $1K incl parts and labor. I've made small repairs myself but I would get a preofessional for the one you've posted. Might want to check with some of the locals at your marina for recommendations.

My guess is 300 to 500 dollars. I had a 1 inch in diameter chip in my gelcoat (my fault) above the waterline, which exposed the 'glass. The 'glass itself was not damaged but the repair still cost $140, labor mostly of course. MM did a great job though.

I'm going to bet it's more in the 500+ it not alot more

I rubbed my boat on a concrete dock and had no where near that kind of damage it was just surface scrapes yours are more gouges. MM wanted about 200-300 to fix mine.

what does MM stand for ? I send the pic in to the sales person at the sea ray dealership to get an estimate of how much they will charge. The gouges and scratches are approx 4in and 10in long, I think the pic makes it appear larger than they are... am I still looking at a $500 + bill ?

Is it ok for me to leave the scratches as is and fix them later ? or will that cause any kind of degradation? like peeling etc ? I am thinking I will wait till the end of the year to get it done...

I dont even have 20hrs yet on this boat, the damn dock is made of metal and no plastic or fiber glass. Oh well...

if you have time and patience you can try to repair yourself using gelcoat repair patch kit (looks like your boat is pearl), can't get worse than how is now.
If you don't want to repair now, just put some silicone or life caulk to cover bare fiberglass (you don't want water to soak too much inside glass

That needs professional help and NO WATER TIME... in my opinion.

I agree and if you keep it outside keep that area covered up you don't want water down inside your boat like that.

eeeeee....
doesn't look that bad, looks like right above rubrail.

I wouldn't waste the money on a patch kit for something like that.

Sail and Ski is the Searay dealer down there, not MM as with everywhere else in the country. :smt043

I don't have anyone I know in the area excpet my friend who did a few minor fixes when he had mine last time building the new motor. His shop is Full Throttle Marine out in Spicewood. If the shop isn't swamped with service and engine work, he may do some gel repair. He did a great job with mine. His name is Bob Lloyd. He's been a friend for several years and the only one I trust with my boat.

Someone else who I don't think does general repair, but does high end custom paint work is Custom Touch Graphics (David Morgan) at 512-423-7889. You might call as ask who he recommends for good glass/gel repair. He's good guy also. You ought to see some of his custom paint work on big go fast's.

Dealers usually have someone they use so they take their persons rate a bump it for their cut as well. Doesn't mean the work isn't good, but it can be high.

(( I have not recovered from the incident yet... still sad and in pain))

Thanks a ton for the information, thanks for the contacts searay jim, I just shot an email to david asking for recommendations, might call him later if I dont get any response. This weekend was pretty awful got a ticket for not displaying trailer plates (fell off the back window of the truck) and also got gouged by the metal in the dock :smt013 :smt089

I am off to west marine to buy a bunch of bumpers BIG ONES!

The top two picks are bad. they went through the gelcoat and into the roven fiberglass. That definitly needs professional attention and repair. The scratch can maybe be polished out. Must have hit that dock pretty good clip. :smt009

I just repaired a similar scratch on someones boat in my marina.
It's about 5 hours of labor, mostly waiting for stuff to dry.
I'd estimate it's about $800 to fix.

If you are interested in learning to do Gel-Coat repair, those scratches are definitely fixable with Spectrum Gel-paste and a can of Gel-coat. I'm glad I learned, this sort of thing happens alot in boating.

It'll need to be sprayed because it's on the corner and getting the paste to spread evenly through a curve is hard to do.

For now, cover the exposed glass with tape, to keep water out.
Get a price and decide if you want to tackle it yourself.

If I was doing that repair it would be $200-$300

and labor aint cheap in New York

if someone says it will take 8 hours to repair that, they need to go back to school :smt043

FYI

Sail n' Ski recently charged me $150 to fix a ding/mark/divot about the size of a quarter.

Searay Jim,

David recommends Fiberglass Plus. They are at Highland Marina on Lake Travis. Phone 512-431-0255. I am going to call them tomorrow and get an estimate. Thanks a ton for all your comments and help.

Cheers

Just another boating tax.. get it fixed and away you go.

Have fun and slow down

Every ding I've received was either someone else, or me thinking the throttle would get me out of trouble. Lesson 1 - The throttle will get you out of trouble about 1 time out of 10 around a dock. The other 9 times, it will likely cause more problems. I think about those odds every time I get into a hairy situation.

$650 incl tax to fix scratches

I just dropped off my boat at the Mcneill Marine Fiberglass plus 15801 F M 2769 Austin, TX 78729, and the bill is $650 with taxes. Oh well... I checked out their work and they seem to do a pretty good job. I will get the boat next Thursday (possibly ).
