Passport Premiere extended service?

Another thread revival!

O’ what a tangled web of mumbo jumbo they weave around the extended warranties – but I may have clarified enough of it to make a decision.

Key points:
1- The default warranty, should a claim be made on the engine(s), is with Mercury.
2- The Passport Engine Category, even though purchased for a term of 6 years, will not be used until after the 2 year included Mercury warranty. (Pay for 6 yrs and receive 4 yrs)
3- The Mercury warranty covers all Mercury products in the boat (gauges and controls) – Passport does not.
4- Passport has more exceptions than Mercury.
5- Passport is more expensive than Mercury.
6- One notable difference in the plans is that Passport pays a service Assist, which may only be 1 hour of travel time to your boat. My Marina is only 10 min. from the dealer, so this is not a concern.
7- You can purchase extended Mercury warranties anywhere from 1-5 years that start after the 2 year included warranty. The purchase can be made anytime within the first year the boat is in service. However, you can only purchase one extension, no matter what the length, one time.
8- You can select from the various Passport warranties individually, however by not purchasing the engine category, all other warranties such as “Captains Classâ€, “Generator†are only offered at 5 years.
9- The three year included corrosion warranty from Mercury can not be extended.
10- The Mercury extensions are transferable.

What I ended up doing is purchasing the 3 year Mercury extensions and Passport Captains Class. This provided the best coverage for 5 years. (The generator is already covered by Kohler for 5 years.) Total savings over the Passport plan = $1,400

Of course, this all may be academic as “ITIS†will likely take over before the 5 years. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the revival Jim  I was just starting to look into the Mercruiser extended program. Are the Passport and Mercury progams separate? I'm not so concerned about the systems on the boat so I was going to consider looking into the propulsion side of things before year 1 ends.

They are separate programs, but I think they are all owned indirectly by Brunswick. Your first two years are directly with Mercury. If you purchase the Mercury extensions, this is through a company called Mercury Product Protection. (This tends to make you think it is directly with Merc.) Apparently, Mercury farms out all warranties beyond the 2 year period – but the coverage is exactly the same as your first 2 years.

I bought the warranty on the new boat (for a shocking amount I'd rather not mention, even after negotiation) and I have 30 days to cancel for a full refund. I'm really thinking of cancelling.

The main reason I'm thinking of cancelling is because of the limits of their liability (as mentioned before). 30K per engine plus 10K for accessories and generator for a total of 70K. Granted, the "shocking amount" is no where near 70K, but considering the typical ratio of preimum to insured value, it's way out of whack. Compound that with the hassle factor of following their procedure and then bickering over claims and deductibles and it just doesn't add up.

BUT (there's always a BUT), I am concerned that not having the warranty may affect resale/trade value down the road. Particularly on a boat with so many systems. Not that I have any intentions of moving beyond this boat, but I have owned 14 boats and 35 cars (yet still only one wife :smt017 ) so I am prone to cycle through things. So then the math becomes will the "ding" on value of not having the warranty offset the savings of not buying the warranty? Maybe, maybe not. Then you add back in the value of the actual warranty... as limited as it may be... and perhaps you have a wash.

As you can see, I'm all over the place on this. I'm glad I did the warranty as a seperate transaction and that I gave him a post-dated check!

Any thoughts?

Prodigal,

If you think about owning all those boats and all those cars, you would probably see that an extended warranty is a waste of money. Just think about any repair costs amortized over all those boats and the decision will be easy. The odds are always with the insurance company.

By the way, these are all insurance products - even the engine manufacturer's product is not "their" warranty, but insurance you buy to pay them to repair covered items.

Sea Gull- I gather you didn't ge the warranty on the 56 (very nice boat by the way  ). So you were not concerned about effect on resale/trade value?

I did not buy the Passport, but do plan to buy the MAN extended service plan in the next month or two.

On the 07 - 320 they wanted $5000 - I decided to keep the cash and save it for repairs. The exclusions from overheating kinda concerned me. Therefore I assumed that many things I would just replace myself. But - many things are covered longer than the boat is anyway. On my 260 - I called the charger manufacturer and got a new charger for $50. I was in the pro-rate period and installed it myself.

Prodigal, how long is the warranty on the new diesels?
I'm almost postive it's two years.

I called the dealer today and told them not to send the paperwork in just yet. Will decide by Monday. Leaning towards no. Thanks all for the advice.

They wanted 20,000 for the ext warrty.... Like frank said ... I self insured.... 20 grand buys alot stuff....
And remember they only fix an item once. so if something fails more then once its ur dime anyway...
The cummins guy told me not to get the warrty on the motors ... The factory warrty was good and the cost of the additional coverage for what it covered was useless...... So I be flying with out a net ....

Doesnt feel so scary....

I'm not doing the warranty, I'll have them rip up that check on Monday.

The Cummins Warranty "includes an upgraded warranty package with base engine coverage of 24 months or 1000 hours. And with extended major components covered for an additional 48 months or 2000 hours"

The way I read that "additional 48 months" sounds like a total of 60 months to me for major components.

I will "self insure" with rigorous preventative maintenance and by holding on to my money.

Thanks again CSR members!

Very informative responses by everyone regarding these “warranty productsâ€. At closing, my dealer indicated most customers purchase the Passport Engine Class and the various other supplemental Passport offerings – and interestingly, they never mentioned the extended Mercury warranties.

If our group is any indication of most Searay owners, then the dealer’s data may be in error. Makes one wonder what their brokerage fee is for selling these programs.

Thought I would throw this data out there as well in case anyone was interested ..............

Passport costs on a brand new 250 Select SLX - $1600-$1700
Passport costs on a brand new 270 Select SLX - $2700

We paid $5,000 Passport Premiere Captains Class on our brand new 300DA.

Like others said, the price was just low enough that when looked at the total of the purchase price is was inconsequential. We decided it would help with resale and give us some peace of mind as this was our first boat, first Sea Ray -- it was as much a "what the heck" decision as it was a numbers one. It will be a smart one if we have a big claim that is paid and a debated one if the boat continues its great record.

For our next boat, we would probably go through alot more analysis and decide at that point.

I did the ext warrty on my old 34.

They wont give me a credit for the remaining time as I had a claim...

The claim inquestion was a DEFECT in design.... but that should all be irrelevant anyway...

The dealer is a dead end.. Passport tells me to go back to the dealer.... WTF...

Anyone know the scoop...

As is generally agreed upon, extended warantees are great for the dealer's and salesman's bottom line, :smt001 great for the "writer", :smt001 and not very "great" for the consumer. :smt009 :smt009
While most propulsion systems are covered for 2 years, and most likely any "flaw" will show up within that period, the question that should be posed to members is:, "Who has ever had to access an extended warantee, and how much did they actually save by being "covered"?" Hmmmm...

I would like to know this too. I'm being presented with this warranty now and from what it looks like, most people don't even break even on these. The odd here are there that do but it seems like they are new boats and would have been covered under the standard warranty. It's a chunk of change for me, I could probably replace a whole engine for the price. I'm leaning towards opting out and self insuring on the warranty end. I'll see after the survey how things look.
