Hey community - I am cleaning up a few things over the winter on our (new to us) 2005 240SD. I want to replace this fuel sticker (it obviously got gas on it and was never cleaned off and ate up the decal). Anyone know what the part # is or

where I can get a replacement?

Your dealer can get them for you - and it will be the newest version of the "warning". But on my boats... once they got damaged, I just removed them all together.

Damn! I bet you also cut those tags off your mattress?!?

Seriously though, in my opinion you either need to remove them when the boat is new to avoid any “ghosting” in the gelcoat, or buy new ones to cover up the ghosting.

Any MarineMax location should have them. Other readers may be able to help you because part # is printed on edge of the decal (unfortunately that part is damaged on yours)

Shhhhh! Don't tell the mattress police! :)

I got rid of all of my warning labels a few years ago and I am still here :)

I LIKE that!

I thought this was interesting... I just looked through my parts fische. It's all computerized now, but you "experienced" guys out there will know what I mean ;)

In 2005, the 240SD had (5) "warning" lables listed in the parts manual. A new Sundeck... (23) warning labels!

I remember that whole debacle... ridiculous.

Is it ridiculous? She had 3rd degree burns requiring skin grafts, 8 days in the hospital, and 2 years of treatment after that. McDonald’s served the coffee at 180-190 degrees, causing 3rd degree burns in 3-12 seconds. Had they lowered the temp to 140, it would take over 30 seconds to cause that damage, time she could have used. McDonalds said the reason they served so hot is so that on your commute, it would stay warm until you arrive. McDonald’s conceded their newer research showed customers wanted to drink the coffee right away, but if you did, it would burn your mouth severely. McDonald’s had already settled over 700 cases, but refused to lower their temps, even though it kept burning people for no good reason.

If she were your mother, would you just say, get over it? She received 640k, and probably took home 320k. Probably spent that much on hospital bills.

Seriously??

If the boat owner read the decal once, why does it need to be read again, and thus, why does it need to be replaced?

Seriously??
Yes, as unexpected as it may seem from spilling a cup of coffee in your lap, the lady was severely injured. Third degree burns, eight days in the hospital, and skin-grafting surgery.

Draw your own conclusions about how the legal case was handled. Her original demand to McDonald’s was $20K, which was meant to cover her actual medical expenses and lost wages of a family member who took care of her. The company offered her $800, so she hired a lawyer. The way the jury saw it, she was badly hurt, the corporate defendant responded calllously, and she was a sympathetic older lady. Even so, the $2.9M jury award was knocked down to $640K.

Our tort law system is broken and ridiculous, especially in California and a number of other choice jurisdictions. But this case was not a good example of it, all indications in the media to the contrary.

Warning labels is how this thing started.... McDonalds, Burger King and Starbucks all sell their coffee at the same temperatures today that this lady was burned with in the 90’s...the difference now is they have warning labels

My brother was killed on a motorcycle because he couldn’t survive a crash at the speed the bike could go.... tell me what the difference is?

I guess when you expect the government and corporations to protect you from yourself ... is when you can feel safe...when they don’t is when you can expect to be compensated?

I completely understand the issues and the injury incurred but I still fail to see how MCDs was responsible for her spilling it.

Under this logic if i accidentally cut myself i am entitled to relief from the manufacturer of the knife.

Somewhere along the way the law lost site of personal responsibility. Now, if a server at a restaurant accidentally spilled the coffee then that would be a completely different thing.

Couldn’t agree more. Nine times out of ten I am on that side of the issue. As I said, our tort law system is a mess. I’m sick and tired of people hitting the lottery for something that was entirely their own fault, and then prices and insurance premiums going up because of it. But not every lawsuit is one of those cases.

This was not a case of someone spilling a drink on themselves and suing for the stains to their clothes or minor discomfort from having a hot drink land in their lap. Those would be foreseeable results of their own carelessness. In this case, someone made and sold a beverage in a cup ready to drink. That beverage should not put someone in the hospital and send them to the OR, simply because it touches their skin.

Personal responsibility applies to all of us, but what is reasonable depends to some degree on each individual’s point of view. Everyone knows coffee is hot, but everyone also knows that a liquid at or close to the boiling point of water is dangerous because it will scald people. That is why hotel showers have governors on them, so the water does not come out in your face at 212 degrees. Maybe we should all know not to allow coffee ever to touch our skin under any circumstances, or on the other hand maybe it is unreasonable for coffee to be sold at the boiling point of water. I see both sides of it. This particular case was allowed to go to a jury, and the jury decided the latter. They made a very high award to punish and send a message, but then the judge lowered it to what he thought was a more reasonable amount. Maybe the jury got it wrong, or maybe not, but I think there is at least a reasonable argument that the system got this one right.

There are plenty of cases where someone sued and got compensated excessively for something that was solely their responsibility, when they shouldn’t have been compensated at all or even allowed in court. Tort caps are meant to address this problem, and although that is not a perfect solution it does prevent many of these multi-million dollar runaway verdicts. I’m just not convinced this particular case is the poster child for the problem, which is what all the hoopla at the time made it out to be.

My appologies, guys. I didn't make that comment to spur a debate - at least not in a thread where a guy was just looking for a new label :) Yes, I have an opinon on this matter, but for the sake of the OP I'll refrain. Todd, it's not about whether I "feel" for the woman, or not - that's a bit of a low blow.

Did not mean to say you didn’t feel for the woman. Not my intention for sure, sorry about that. Now to remove more of these stickers from my boat... I think I have 2 left...

Thanks, Todd. It's probably just the way I read it - no body language or tone of voice with just words.

I understand the sticker thing is just the way it is now... but still!
