I am looking to re-paint my deck stripes for my spring project. The old ones are faded and a little cracked. Do I have to completely remove the old ones down to gel coat, or can I just scuff them up, clean with denatured alcohol, mask them off and paint over them? Second question, what type of paint is recommended? Thanks for the help!

In reality a good quality stripe will last about 7 to 10 years before needing replacement.
Depending on where you are and exposure to the sun, Southern Florida cut it in half.
Your location should give you at least the 7 year mark.

ProStripe is a "premium cast vinyl" stripe manufacturer. Sizes ranging from 1/8 to 2 inches in width.
You can get just about any color in multiple shades. Search "prostripe" on the internet to find suppliers and color charts.

A few tips:
When replacing wipe the hull down with denatured alcohol to remove any waxes before applying. Also, there is a very thin clear covering that needs to be pealed off after they are applied.

I hope this helps

I'll bet if you look close enough, you'll see that your 20 year old stripes are actually decals...

Took the words out of my mouth....

The fact that they are cracking would indicate that you have old vinyl striping that has weathered and dried. If it were paint, the stripes would be faded, not cracked.

Thanks for the insight, I really hadn't looked at the stripes close enough to figure that out. This will be the first spring wax / buff for me. I probably would have figured it out then. I looked at the WM stripe kits, I like the reflective tape, is that legal, and how would it hold up? My stripes are burgundy and brownish.

Try some local sign shops for new stripes. They will should have the exact same material as WM does, but in more colors & sizes and they usually sell it by the foot.

Cutting the graphics work myself on our race boat and replacing stripes on the others, I did much research on this. Knowing what the vinyl really costs - I suggest saving some money on a premium product and look up the "prostripe" like I mentioned before. Many of automotive shops sell it and have catalogs with color charts available to look through. Just sharing my thoughts and learning curve over the years.

You can use reflective but note that they do not have as long of a life.
It is also thicker and does not form around tight corners or curves as well.

Later Eh!
